Ducks Roll to Five in a Row
02/09/25 | Softball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 23 Oregon closed out a record run at the UNLV Desert Classic with an 8-1 victory over Buffalo Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.
Oregon scored 73 runs – a program record for any five-game span – in going 5-0 on the opening weekend.
Three Duck pitchers combined to throw a four-hitter against the Bulls and freshman Stefini Ma'ake sparked the offense with a two-run home run.
During the weekend, Oregon broke school records for most runs scored in a two-game span (39), three-game span (55), four-game span (65) and five-game span (73).
"Throughout this year, we're going to have to find different ways to win," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "I think we learned this weekend we have the ability to win in different ways."
Lyndsey Grein took over in the circle for the Ducks in the fourth and struck out two of the of the three batters she faced to end the inning. She threw 3.2 innings of no-hit ball and struck out five to earn her third win of the season.
How It Happened: Kai Luschar helped Oregon manufacture a run in the bottom of the first. She walked and stole both second and third. Ma'ake then came through with a two-out base hit to score Luschar for a 1-0 lead.
After Buffalo (1-4) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second, Ayanna Shaw's infield single helped the Ducks retake the lead in the bottom of the frame. Kedre Luschar walked and stole second. Katie Flannery sacrificed Kedre Luschar to third before Shaw's chopper down the first base line brought the go-ahead run home.
Ma'ake crushed a two-run shot in the third inning to give the Ducks a 4-1 lead. Emma Cox walked ahead of Ma'ake, who drove the ball deep over the wall in left field for her second home run of the season.
Oregon used its speed to score its final four runs.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kai Luschar doubled to drive in Shaw, stole third and then scored on a passed ball to make it 6-1. Two Buffalo errors later in the frame resulted in the Ducks' final two runs.
In addition to the 73 runs, Oregon's prolific offensive numbers for the weekend included 70 hits, 10 doubles, 10 home runs and 66 RBI. The Ducks batted .464 as a team, slugged .742 and were a perfect 32-of-32 in stolen bases.
"I love the way the team started," said Lombardi. "We talked about understanding how to start fast. Our offense was amazing. I loved how fast we were on the bases."
Grein and fellow newcomer Staci Chambers combined for 40 strikeouts in Las Vegas. Grein also saved Saturday's win over UNLV to go along with her three wins on the weekend.
"I loved what the pitchers were doing," said Lombardi. "You could see they had good velo; good movement.
"I really liked what Staci did against UNLV," said Lombardi. "You really saw what she's capable of. And I thought Lyndsey just got stronger as the weekend went along."
Notable: Oregon's five-game run total is eight better than the previous mark, 65 (Feb. 9-11, 2018) … Kai Luschar, Paige Sinicki and Shaw all had two base hits against Buffalo … Kai Luschar, Ma'ake and Shaw had a hit in all five games this weekend … Sinicki made her 134th consecutive start at shortstop … Kai Luschar's nine stolen bases on the weekend moved her one steal away from entering the UO career top 10 at 57.
