Ducks Fall in Extra Innings at ASU
02/13/25 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 21 Oregon rallied from a two-run deficit in the third inning to tie the game but ultimately fell to former Pac-12 rival Arizona State, 4-3, in eight innings Thursday at Farrington Stadium in the first game of the Littlewood Classic.
Elise Sokolsky was stellar out of the bullpen for the Ducks, throwing 4.0 shutout innings, while two freshmen, Kaylynn Jones and Emma Cox, came through at the plate with run-scoring hits.
How It Happened: Oregon (5-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Jones walked and stole second before Cox got Oregon on the scoreboard with a line drive to right that scored Jones from second.
The Sun Devils (4-1) took their first lead of the night, 3-1, with three runs in the bottom of the third.
A fielding mistake led to a two-out rally for the Ducks in the top of the fourth. Ayanna Shaw reached on an error and stole second before Kai Luschar walked. Jones then laced an 0-1 pitch up the middle for a double that scored both runners and tied the game at 3-3.
Pitching took over the game from there. Sokolsky gave up just one hit, walked one and struck out two in her longest outing of the year.
Unfortunately for Oregon, ASU's staff was just as effective. The Sun Devils didn't allow a hit after the fourth inning.
Oregon's best scoring opportunity after the fourth came in the top of the eighth when the Ducks advanced a runner to third with no outs.
But Paige Sinicki hit a comebacker to the pitcher, Dezianna Patmon struck out after a 12-pitch battle and pinch-hitter Rylee McCoy flied out to center to end the threat.
In the bottom of the frame, ASU scored the winning run from second base on a soft line drive that grazed the top of Patmon's outstretched glove at first before skipping into right field.
Oregon continued to put speed on display on the basepaths. The Ducks stole four bases on Friday, giving them an NCAA-best 36 steals on the season. Shaw had two, while Jones and Luschar both had one. Luschar's stolen base was the 58th of her career, which moved her into the UO career top 10. She's now tied for ninth with Julie Cavanaugh (1998-91) and Marnie McCall (1991-92).
Notable: Oregon broke a scoring record for the fifth straight game. With three runs on Thursday, Oregon has scored 76 runs in its first six games. That beat the previous six-game span of 73, reached in both 2015 and 2018 … Shaw extended her hitting streak to a career-best six games … Jones had two of the Ducks' four hits … Coming into Thursday, the Ducks had won six in a row against the Sun Devils … Sinicki made her 135th consecutive start at shortstop.
Up Next: The Littlewood Classic continues Friday with two more games in Tempe. The Ducks will play North Dakota at 9:30 a.m. and Weber State at 12:15 p.m. Oregon will then switch venues to GCU Softball Stadium for games Saturday against Utah Valley (9:30 a.m.) and Grand Canyon (3 p.m.), and Sunday versus Belmont (8 a.m.).
