Two Different Halves The Story At MSU
02/08/25 | Men's Basketball
Oregon was up 50-36 at halftime Saturday at Michigan State, but the No. 9 Spartans flipped momentum in the second half.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Oregon men's basketball team made progress in Michigan, albeit ultimately with frustrating results.
The Ducks (16-8, 5-8 Big Ten) put together their second straight competitive effort in the Wolverine State on Saturday, but came away with a second loss, and their fifth straight overall. Three days after a four-point loss at No. 24 Michigan, the UO men saw a 14-point halftime lead lost in a second-half barrage by No. 9 Michigan State, which won 86-74 at the Breslin Center.
Oregon scored 50 points in the first half but allowed 50 in the second, as Michigan State flipped the script with help from a raucous crowd energized by a 9-0 run for the Spartans out of halftime. After 10-of-19 three-point shooting in the first half, the Ducks missed all eight of their second-half attempts.
"I thought our ball movement was better (in the first half), our activity," UO coach Dana Altman said. "We got some runouts on turnovers, which really helped us. I was much more pleased with our defensive activity the first half, when I just thought we were really active. But when they punched us that second half, our activity went down. And they kind of got whatever they wanted."

Jackson Shelstad led the Ducks with 22 points, including 18 in the first half as Oregon took a 50-36 lead into the break. Kwame Evans Jr. had one of his best performances yet in conference play this season, adding 10 points with seven rebounds, much of it during the Ducks' dominant first half.
How It Happened: Shelstad and Nate Bittle hit three-pointers to open the game, and a layup by Shelstad gave Oregon an early 8-2 lead. Michigan State tied it with six straight and used another 6-0 run to go up 17-13, but the Ducks tied it 19-19 on a three-point play by Evans.
Trailing 21-19, Oregon mounted a 10-1 run sparked by an Evans three-pointer and capped by five straight from Bittle. With Michigan State back within four at 34-30, the UO men scored eight in a row, the last five by Shelstad. When Keeshawn Barthelemy capped the first half with a three, the Ducks took a 50-36 lead into the break.

The Spartans quickly took command in the second, opening the half with nine straight. Supreme Cook completed a three-point play to give Oregon a 54-48 lead, and TJ Bamba made four free throws during an 8-0 run that made it 62-53. But Michigan State responded with a 17-2 run to take control and kept its foot on the gas the rest of the way.
Up Next: The Ducks host Northwestern on Tuesday (8 p.m., BTN).
