UO Men Get Back In The Win Column
02/11/25 | Men's Basketball
Oregon got a career night from Jackson Shelstad and held off a comeback bid by Northwestern in the second half Tuesday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon men's basketball team returned home Saturday from its trip to Michigan, hoping to turn encouraging stretches from each of two losses in the Wolverine State into a more complete performance that would end the Ducks' five-game losing streak.
Tuesday may not have been as complete as they'd have liked, but overall it was mission accomplished for the UO men, as they trailed for only 32 seconds of an 81-75 victory over Northwestern at Matthew Knight Arena. Like Saturday at Michigan State, the Ducks came out hot offensively but then saw the opponent catch fire after halftime, but this time Oregon produced enough second-half offense of its own to maintain the lead.
"We're just happy to get back in the win column," UO sophomore Jackson Shelstad said. "It got a little ugly at the end of the game; we definitely need to still work on playing a full 40 minutes of our best basketball. But we got the win and we've just got to keep the momentum going from here."

Shelstad scored a career-high 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting with four three-pointers to lead the UO men, and Keeshawn Barthelemy also hit four threes on his way to 19 points. Nate Bittle added 14 points with seven rebounds, with the Ducks plus-17 in the scoring column during his 27 minutes on the floor.
"We desperately needed a win — but I hope our guys can learn from it," UO coach Dana Altman said. "I want them to be excited about the win and excited about the first-half defensive effort, but I want them to learn also we have to get better in the second half. That's two in a row now."
How It Happened: Shelstad and Bittle set the tone early, hitting the first two field goals of the game. After Northwestern tied it 4-4, Shelsted scored five points during a 7-0 run by the Ducks.

The Wildcats answered with a 10-2 run, taking their only lead of the night at 14-13. Shelstad got the Ducks back in front with a three, and Barthelemy followed with another. Oregon pushed the lead to double digits for the first time when consecutive baskets by Brandon Angel made it 30-20, and a 9-0 run capped by five points from Barthelemy made it 39-22 before Northwestern closed the first half with a three-pointer.
That made it 39-25 at the break, and the teams traded baskets coming out of halftime before TJ Bamba followed a Barthelemy three with a bucket that put Oregon up 16 at 50-44. Northwestern cut into the lead and threatened to get within single digits a handful of times before finally doing so with 6:57 to play at 64-56.

There were some tense moments late as the Wildcats closed within five points three different times. But the Ducks went 21-of-24 from the free-throw line in the second half, holding off the comeback bid and securing their first win since Jan. 21.
"It's huge for our confidence," Shelstad said. "A lot of times you've just got to see one win to pick your momentum back up. And honestly I feel we can get a lot better. Just try to get better every day in practice and see where it can take us."
