Ducks Drop Tough Battle to Stanford
12/21/25 | Women's Basketball
Cardinal pulls away late to hand UO its second loss.
SAN FRANCISCO – In a battle of former conference rivals, a tightly contested battle at the Invisalign Bay Area Women's Classic went the way of the Cardinal.
Oregon got a double-double for the third straight game from Mia Jacobs to go with 14 points from both Ehis Etute and Katie Fiso, but a five-point game with less than two minutes to play turned into a 64-53 Cardinal victory at Chase Center.
"I thought it was a game we could have won," said Oregon head coach Kelly Graves. "We haven't had a lot of close games, we've only been in two and we played like it, unfortunately, late. But give Stanford credit, they're a really good basketball team."
The Ducks (12-2) trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, but chipped away at Stanford's (11-2) lead and took a three-point lead midway through the third quarter after a Jacobs triple and a Fiso layup. The Cardinal responded by scoring the next eight and never relinquished the lead again.
"We left a lot of points out on the court," Graves added. "Missed layups, some free throws late. That's what happens when you get tested in a tight game."
UO shot 32 percent from the field as a team, but went just 2-of-14 from the 3-point line with Jacobs accounting for both triples. Stanford shot 40 percent overall and 33 percent from beyond the arc while owning a 40-24 edge in points in the paint.
How It Happened: After a Fiso drive and layin on the Ducks' opening possession, Oregon made just one of its next 11 shots from the floor. The cold stretch allowed Stanford to score nine unanswered as part of a 15-2 run. An Etute bucket ended a four-minute scoring drought, as the sophomore connected on three consecutive layups to help trim the first-quarter deficit to seven points.
UO continued to gain its footing early in the second quarter, going on a 7-2 run to begin the quarter and closed within two, 21-19, just three minutes in. From there, neither side managed a scoring run larger than four points and Stanford took a 31-25 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Cardinal shot 41 percent in the first half while UO managed just 33 percent and went 0-for-7 from the 3-point line. Etute went 4-for-5 from the field in turning in a team-high nine points and while Jacobs grabbed five rebounds. Fiso added six points and Ari Long scored four.
Jacobs knocked down two 3-pointers early in the third quarter, helping spark a 10-3 run to open the second half. Jacobs' second trey gave the Ducks a 35-34 lead, their first lead since the first quarter, and later led 37-34 after a 12-1 scoring burst.
Stanford answered with eight consecutive points of its own after knocking down 3-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor to create a five-point edge with under three minutes remaining in the frame. UO finished the third by scoring four of the final six points to cut SU's lead to three, 44-41, after 30 minutes.
Ari Long knocked down a pair of jumpers early in the fourth, with her second basket bringing the Ducks within two points with under eight minutes remaining. Later, Oregon was within five points with 90 seconds on the clock after a Fiso driving layup. But Stanford kept UO at arm's length and scored the next seven points to stretch it to a 12-point difference and held on for a 64-53 win.
