LAST TIME OUT
Back in action a week after their 10-game season-opening win streak ended, the Oregon women's basketball team got to work trying to put together another.
The Ducks (11-1) bounced back from their lone loss — on the road against No. 4 UCLA — with a commanding 69-44 win Sunday over Montana State before 4,169 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The UO women forced 23 turnovers and held the Bobcats to 28.6 percent shooting, helping Oregon dominate on a day the Ducks themselves shot just 32.8 percent.
Sofia Bell scored 15 points to lead the Ducks, and Mia Jacobs added her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Ari Long added 10 points — that trio combined to go 9-of-18 from three-point range — and Katie Fiso also scored 10 while attempting a season-low five shots.
SCOUTING PORTLAND
Portland (5-5) has won three of its four games after starting the season 2-4. The Pilots are coming off a 94-58 road win over Long Beach State in their last game on Dec. 11, getting a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double from Julia Dalan.
Dyani Ananiev paces UP with 10.1 points per game to go with 3.0 steals a game while shooting 32.6 percent from the 3-point line. Florence Dallow adds 9.9 points and 4.2 rebounds a game, with Dalan averaging 7.6 points to go with a team-high 5.8 boards while leading the country at 3.6 blocks per night.
As a team, the Pilots lead the West Coast Conference steals per game (11.4), turnovers forced per game (22.0), assists per game (17.7) and bench points per game (30.3).
In the WCC's preseason coaches poll, Portland was voted fourth in the league while Ananiev was selected to the conference's preseason team. The Pilots mark the fourth and final team from the WCC on Oregon's schedule this season after already defeating Oregon State, Saint Mary's and Washington State.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Oregon and Portland will meet for the 38th time on Thursday in a series that dates back to 1974. The Ducks own a 31-6 edge in the series, but saw a seven-game winning streak against the Pilots come to an end in their last meeting on Nov. 30, 2023 in Portland. UO is unbeaten at home in the series, boasting a perfect 20-0 record. The last time the teams met at Matthew Knight Arena, the then-19th-ranked Ducks came away with a 90-51 victory on Dec. 3, 2022.
Head coach Kelly Graves, in his 29th season as a Division I head coach with stops at Saint Mary's and Gonzaga, holds a 37-8 career record against the Pilots - his most victories against a single opponent in his coaching career. Graves is 6-1 against UP during his Oregon tenure while going 3-0 at home.
OFF AND RUNNING
Oregon began the season 10-0 for just the third time in program history before suffering its first loss of the season on Dec. 7 at No. 4 UCLA. It marked the first 10-0 start since beginning the 2015-16 season 11-0, and the second 10-0 start or better under 12th-year head coach Kelly Graves. The Ducks' 11-1 start is its best 12-game start since the 2019-20 season, and the third 11-1 start or better under Graves. UO's offense has scored 80 or more in eight of 12 games, including five straight to being the season - its longest streak to begin a season since seven straight such games to open the 2019-20 season. UO's scoring offense of 78.9 points per game ranks No. 34 nationally and 11th in the Big Ten.
Seven different Ducks have led or tied for the team lead in scoring, with 11 different players producing a double-digit scoring performance. Three times this season five different players finished in double figures, most recently in a Nov. 16 win over Army: Mia Jacobs (17), Sofia Bell (14), Amina Muhamad (14), Katie Fiso (12) and Sarah Rambus (12). Five of the 11 players with a double-figure scoring game came off the bench (Avary Cain, Ehis Etute, Muhammad, Astera Tuhina and Janiyah Williams).
» Oregon's offensive rating of 108.0 (points per 100 possessions) ranks ninth in the Big Ten while averaging 73.1 possessions per 40 minutes (seventh in Big Ten). UO had an offensive rating of 96.0 with an average of 70.2 possessions per 40 minutes last year.
» UO's field goal percentage of 48.2 is 19th-best in the country, with its 55.3 percent on two-point shots ranking No. 18 in the nation and sixth in the conference.
» Oregon ranks 23rd in the country and eighth in the league with an effective field goal percentage of 53.6 percent.
» The Ducks' bench put up 56 points against Old Dominion on Nov. 27, outscoring the Monarchs' entire team in an 84-46 win on the final day of the Hoopfest Women's Challenge.
» It was the second game with 40-plus points for UO's reserves, as they accounted for 47 of 90 points against Montana on Nov. 8 and fourth outing of at least 30 points (28.3 bench points per game ranks 47th in the nation).
» UO's 18.8 assists per game is good for 18th nationally, posting an assisted shot rate of 62.8 percent (eighth in the Big Ten).
» The Ducks are second in the Big Ten and No. 9 in the nation in free throw shooting (81.2 percent), while their 1.26 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 27th nationally.
STORM AND SWARM
Oregon's suffocating defense, a chief reason for Oregon's success a season ago, is back again this year. The Ducks have forced at least 20 turnovers nine times and recorded double-digit steals in 10 of 12 contests to start the season. The 10 games with 10 or more steals are tied for the second-most in the country, and behind only national leader Maryland, while the nine 20-turnover games are tied for fourth-most such games nationally and one game behind the nation's leaders. In nine games this season, UO's defense has recorded double-digit steals while forcing 20 or more turnovers - tied for the second-most such games in the country.
Oregon forced a season-high 32 turnovers against West Georgia behind 24 steals in the season opener, its most steals in a game since 2013. Oregon's defense recorded 12 or more steals and forced at least 23 turnovers in four consecutive games to begin the season. UO turned in 10 or more steals in five consecutive games from Nov. 23 to Dec. 3, matching the longest streak from a season ago. The four consecutive games with 20-plus turnovers to start the season marked its longest since eight straight such games during the 2010-11 season.
» Oregon created at least 22 turnovers in three straight outings, forcing 29 vs. Utah State, 26 against Saint Mary's and 22 against Old Dominion. UO has two different stretches of at least three consecutive games with 22 or more forced turnovers.

» UO recorded 18 steals and forced 29 Utah State turnovers in its 70-34 win on Nov. 23, both the second-highest totals of the season.
» The 34 points allowed to the Aggies marked UO's fewest given up since a 97-33 win over Charleston on Dec. 18, 2022 - and only the ninth time yielding 34 points or fewer since 1999.
» The Aggies went just 1-of-18 (5.6 percent) from the 3-point line, while Montana State was 1-for-19 (5.3 percent) in Sunday's game.
» The two games mark UO's lowest 3-point percentages allowed since holding Baylor without a 3-point field goal in the 2019 Final Four (0-for-3).
» The Ducks' seven games with 12 or more steals are two off the national lead.
» Oregon is recording a steal on 15.3 percent of opponent possessions, which is the fourth-highest rate in the Big Ten and 19th-highest in the nation.

RING THE BELL
Junior guard Sofia Bell is a phenom on the court and in the classroom. Bell earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon after only two years and is already enrolled in an MBA program at UO. On the basketball court, she is a disruptor to opposing offenses and has developed into a knock-down 3-point shooter. The 6-foot Bell is tied for the team lead in 3-pointers and second in blocks and third in steals, recording at least one steal in 10 of 12 games this season with multiple steals in seven contests. On Dec. 7 at UCLA, she saw her career-best 13 stretch of consecutive games with a steal come to an end, dating back to last season. Bell has registered at least one theft in 43 of her 61 career games (70.5 percent), while finishing with multiple steals 23 times. Nine of her 26 career blocks have come this season after having just three over 28 games last year.

Her 15 points against Montana State on Dec. 14 tied her career high and marked the first time in her career she led the Ducks in scoring, becoming the seventh different player to lead UO in points through 12 games this season. Bell is one of just 14 players in the nation, and one of two players in the Big Ten, to have at least nine blocks while making at least 22 3-pointers.
EHIS THE BEAST

It marked Etute's first double-double of her career while grabbing a career high in rebounds, going 7-of-10 from the floor. She scored nine points and hauled in 11 boards in the second half to help UO overcome a 14-point second-half deficit against the Tigers.
