Greene, Erickson Pace Ducks in Utah
08/30/24 | Cross Country
The UO men opened their season Friday morning at the Utah Valley Invitational.
OREM, Utah – Running with lineup primarily composed of newcomers and middle-distance standouts, the Oregon men's cross country team opened its season with an eighth-place effort at the Utah Valley Invitational.
The Ducks' controlled run was paced by Ben Greene and Matthew Erickson with nearly identical marks of 16:00.8 and 16:00.9, respectively. Greene is a newcomer for the Ducks as a transfer from Colorado and Erickson was an NCAA West qualifier at 800 meters last spring.
The remaining four in the UO lineup all ran together and crossed the finish line almost simultaneously with Vincent Mestler (16:16.5) just ahead of Tomas Palfrey, Jeffery Rogers and James Harding. The four finished within four-tenths of one another. Palfrey was an NCAA Championships qualifier in the 1500.
Greene, Harding, Palfrey and Rogers were all making cross country debuts for the Ducks.
The UO men return to action Sept. 28 for the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. That meet will be followed by the Bill Dellinger Invitational (Oct. 11) in Springfield, Ore., where the men and women will run at the same meet for the first time this season.
The Women of Oregon get their season started with the Pre's Trail Run (Sept. 6) in Eugene followed by the Nuttycombe Invitational (Sept. 27) in Madison, Wis.
