Ducks Drop Tough Road Match to Aggies
08/22/24 | Women's Soccer
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Oregon dropped a close 2-1 decision to a veteran New Mexico State team that is now 1-0-1 against teams from the Big Ten Conference two weeks into the 2024 season.
All three goals came in a span of 10 minutes in the first half Thursday at the NMSU Soccer Athletic Complex, with the Aggies scoring first, the Ducks drawing even two minutes later before the final goal by NMSU in the 37th minute that proved to be the difference.
Led by 17 seniors and juniors, NMSU (2-0-1) opened the season with a 2-2 draw against No. 23 USC and a 3-1 win against New Mexico last week and hasn't lost a regular-season match in nearly a year.
Oregon saw its two-match winning streak end in falling to 2-1-0.
How It Happened: The Aggies scored the first goal of the match on a quick restart coming out of a hydration break in the 28th minute.
Less than two minutes later Haley McWhirter answered for the Ducks. Sydney Hennessey took advantage of a free kick to find McWhiter with a clear path to the net. McWhirter then scored her first goal of the season on a shot that found the left side of the goal.
Oregon was whistled for a foul just outside of its own penalty area in the 37th minute and former Duck Brooke Schultz converted the free kick to give NMSU a 2-1 lead.
The Aggies outshot Oregon 15-9. McWhiter led the Ducks with three shot attempts, while Livvy Moore had two.
Notable: While it was her first at Oregon, the goal for McWhirter was the 15th of her collegiate career. … Hennessey's assist was the third of her career and first as a Duck.
Quotable:
UO coach Graeme Abel
"All credit goes to New Mexico State, they executed in their game plan. We are disappointed we couldn't find our rhythm and we were caught chasing. We'll learn from it; our focus now shifts completely to Sunday as we prepare for another good team."
Up Next: Oregon remains in the Land of Enchantment to play New Mexico Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Albuquerque (MW Network).
