Ducks Tied for Seventh Entering Final Round
05/19/24 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. — The Oregon women's golf team will play in the final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships on Monday after closing Sunday's third round in a tie for seventh place at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
The 30-team field was cut to the top 15 following Sunday's action, and the top eight at the end of Monday's round will advance to the match play portion of the championships.
The No. 12 Ducks battled through the third round to an 11-over 299, after surging up the leaderboard with a 5-under 283 on Saturday. Oregon is tied with Auburn for seventh place at 12-over par overall, meaning the Ducks and Tigers currently hold the final two qualifying spots for match play. Arkansas lurks in ninth place just one stroke back at 13 over, USC is in 10th at 14 over.
"It was a grind out there today," head coach Derek Radley said. "The wind picked up and the golf course started playing a lot harder, especially on the back nine. We didn't have our best day, but we're still right there going into the final round. Tomorrow is going to be a battle and I can't wait to see how our ladies respond to the adversity we faced today."
Oregon was once again led by star freshman Kiara Romero, who fired a 1-under 71 to follow her 6-under 66 on Saturday. Romero goes into Monday at 4-under par overall and in a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard.
"Kiara continues to be our rock at the top of our lineup," Radley said. "She is just so steady and consistent, and to play the way she is on this stage as a true freshman is really impressive."

How it Happened: The Ducks got off to a hot start, combining to make five birdies and just one bogey through their first five holes. Oregon made the turn at 1-under par, but ran into trouble on the back nine with a combined three birdies compared to 11 bogeys and four doubles.
Another strong outing from Romero kept Oregon inside the top eight, as the first-team all-Pac-12 selection carded her 23rd par-or-better performance in 30 rounds this season. Romero made two birdies on the front nine and was bogey free while making the turn at 2 under, and she carded just one bogey on the back nine to come in with a 71.
With her two birdies, Romero matched Oregon great Hsin-Yu Lu (2021-22) for the program single-season record with 116.
"My approaches out there have been really good," Romero said. "Today, the course is getting a little bit harder so you have to be a little bit more patient out there, but I think I did pretty solid and had a pretty steady round."
Senior Minori Nagano matched her round from Saturday with another 1-over 73, anchored by a 1-under par performance on the back nine. With Oregon in need of a birdie late in its round, Nagano delivered by draining a long putt on No. 18 to end her day.
Freshman Karen Tsuru came in with a 5-over 77, while senior Ching-Tzu Chen and freshman Ting-Hsuan Huang rounded out the counting scores with 5-over 78s.

Notable: Chen now has 352 career birdies, just two back of Caroline Inglis (354, 2013-16) for No. 2 in program history … Oregon is even par on par-5 holes so far in Carlsbad, tied for the second-best mark in the field … The Ducks are tied for fourth among all teams with 42 total birdies, and Romero is tied for seventh among individuals with 12.
