Ross Breaks Shot Put Collegiate Record

The Ducks collected eight wins on a busy day across three meets.

EUGENE, Ore. – Competing at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., Oregon standout Jaida Ross broke the collegiate record Saturday with a measure of 19.71m/64-8 in the shot put Saturday afternoon. Ross' historic performance highlighted an eight-win day for the Ducks across three meets at the Triton Invite, Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Ore., and Jenn Boyman Memorial in McMinnville, Ore.

Jadyn Mays and Katriina Wright were double winners for the UO sprinters at Cal.

Already leading the competition, Ross unleashed the record-breaking throw on her third attempt of the day. The final measure of 19.71m/64-8 also doubles as the current No. 5 toss in the world this year, and moves Ross past UO former teammate Jorinde van Klinken atop the program's top-10 list. Ross also had marks of 18.72 and 18.66 meters during her series Saturday.

The Medford, Ore., native replaced the previous NCAA standard of 19.64m/64-5.25 set by Ohio State's Adelaide Aquilla during the 2022 NCAA Championships in Eugene. Saturday marked Ross' first shot put since March 9 when she took second at the NCAA Indoor meet in Boston.

Oregon now lays claim to the indoor and outdoor shot put records. Van Klinken set the indoor record in February 2023.

Mays doubled up in the 100 and 200 meters at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. She stopped the clock in 11.28 and 22.85, respectively, to out-pace the field. She led a trio of Ducks inside the top seven over 100 meters, joined by Lily Jones in third place and Alexa Rossum in seventh. In the 200, Ella Clayton was the runner-up in 23.60 to complete a 1-2 UO finish.

For her part, Wright took first in the 400 meters and then capped the meet teaming with Clayton, Lakely Doht-Barron and Shana Grebo for a win in the 4x400 relay. Wright posted a winning time of 53.07 in her solo venture, also good for the fastest outdoor opener of her career. The Ducks posted a time of 3:35.13 for the final victory of the weekend.

Aaliyah McCormick ran away from the field in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.11, more than two tenths of a second clear of the runner-up. The sophomore standout is now 2-for-2 in the hurdles this season, adding to her victory at her outdoor-opening Aztec Invitational two weeks ago.

At Boyman Memorial Invitational, Isabella Nilsen (3.36m/11-0.25) and Hunter Angove (4.78m/15-8.25) battled cool, wet conditions to take the top spots in the pole vault. Nilsen secured her victory in a jump off while Angove had the one clearance at his opening height before shutting it down.

PJ Ize-Iyamu collected a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 meters at Cal, recording a season-best time of 10.33 in the shorter sprint. He added a slightly wind-aided 21.06 (+2.5) over 200 meters. He was just off his lifetime bests of 10.25 and 20.83 from last year's Pac-12 Championships.

In another season-best effort, Mason Strunk had a day's best of 65.56m/215-1 to finish third among the collegiate throwers and fourth overall in the Triton Invite hammer. Including his farthest toss of the day, Strunk's final three measure were all beyond his previous season best of 63.97 meters from the Oregon Preview (March 22).

Up Next: The Ducks are scheduled for the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 11-13) in Azusa, Calif., and the Beach Invitational (April 12-13) in Long Beach.
