Gritty Second Half From Ducks In Rivalry Loss
02/04/24 | Women's Basketball
Oregon rallied from down 13 to tie Sunday's rivalry matchup in the fourth quarter, before dropping a 64-60 decision.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon rallied from down by as many as 13 to tie Sunday's rivalry matchup in the fourth quarter, but Oregon State held off the UO women for a 64-60 victory before 8,602 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
A 9-0 run early in the second quarter gave the No. 18 Beavers a 28-15 lead, but Oregon (11-12, 2-8 Pac-12) closed within five at halftime and then tied the game with the first basket of the fourth quarter. After OSU regained the lead, the Ducks made it a one-point game four different times, but they were unable to pull back in front before time expired.
"I'm just really disappointed for our team," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "I thought we played a really good basketball game. We played really hard tonight, gave ourselves a chance to win against a good team, and fell just a bit short. But really proud of the effort. I keep believing good things are going to happen with this group."
Phillipina Kyei had 16 points and 18 rebounds to lead the UO women, Chance Gray scored 15 and Grace VanSlooten added 14. The Beavers had four players score in double digits, and they also got a double-double from their post — 14 points and 16 rebounds for Raegan Beers.

"Those are two really good centers battling there," Graves said. "That was a good matchup. They got contributions from a little bit more than we did. Our 'Big Three' really had a great ballgame; they had that fourth scorer tonight, and that made the difference."
How It Happened: The Ducks trailed 30-25 at halftime, and got six points from Kyei during a back-and-forth stretch of the third quarter that got them within 39-36. The Beavers scored to get the lead back to five, 41-36, but a free throw from Kyei and then a steal and layup by VanSlooten got Oregon within 41-39 entering the fourth.
Kyei scored the opening basket of the final quarter, and the game was tied at 41-41. A four-point play helped OSU back out to a 47-42 lead, but Gray responded with a three-pointer, and a three-point play by VanSlooten got the Ducks back within 49-48. After Gray made it a one-point game again at 54-53, the Ducks got a stop but couldn't convert at the other end, and OSU went on an 8-2 run to lead 62-55 with 1:20 left.
A basket from Kennedi Williams, an OSU miss and another bucket from Gray got the Ducks within 62-59 with less than 30 seconds left. Coming out of a timeout the UO women forced a turnover that gave them a chance to tie it up, but they seem disorganized in transition and Graves reluctantly called a timeout.
"We got the steal, we wanted to push it; we didn't want to waste a timeout there, figuring we could use it later," Graves said. "But it looked like we were a little unorganized. We wanted to push it and get downhill to the basket on that."
Instead, the Ducks looked to execute in the halfcourt out of the timeout, and Kyei got to the line. She made 1-of-2 free throws, capping a night on which Oregon was 11-of-17 as a team from the free-throw line. OSU made two free throws at the other end with 9.9 seconds left, and Oregon couldn't get a shot off on the final possession.
"It was a hard-fought effort for us," Gray said. "It was a couple missed plays here and there that led to them pulling the game out. But it was definitely a hard-fought effort."

VanSlooten, Kyei and Gray all scored in the opening moments of the game, as Oregon took an early 7-2 lead. The Beavers responded with 11 in a row, and they led 19-11 after one quarter.
Baskets from VanSlooten and Sarah Rambus got the Ducks back within four early in the second, but OSU scored the next nine in a row to forge that 28-15 lead. From there, though, Oregon put together a 10-0 run to which four different scorers contributed, before OSU scored last in the second to lead 30-25 at halftime.
