Ducks Grind Out Win at No. 60 Iowa
02/23/24 | Women's Tennis
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 52nd-ranked Oregon women's tennis team found itself in a battle against future Big Ten foe Iowa on Friday, as Jo-Yee Chan and Karin Young were able to each win in three sets to lift the Ducks to a 4-3 win at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
"Proud of the way the team competed today to earn back-to-back wins on the road against future Big Ten opponents," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "This team has really shown a lot of growth since the start of the season and we are looking forward to another battle on Sunday."
The Ducks (7-3) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, winning the doubles point along with Uxia Martinez Moral's straight-set win at fourth singles. Iowa, ranked at No. 60 in the latest ITA poll, then responded with wins on courts one and two, meaning the match would come down to the final three singles matches – all of which went the full three sets.
Chan earned a 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 win at the third spot in the lineup, only to see the Hawkeyes tie the match at 3-3 with a third-set tiebreak won on court six.
The match's final point came down to a third set at No. 5 singles between Karin Young and Pia Kranholdt. Young, who dropped the first set 6-4, won the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the third straight win for the Ducks, and sixth win in their last seven matches.
Young improved her team-best singles record to 7-1 while Chan and Martinez Moral both pushed their spring records to 7-3.
The Ducks will stay in Iowa City to take on Iowa State on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT at Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
