No. 13 Ducks Sweep Michigan State for 20th Win
11/21/24 | Women's Volleyball
Junior OH Mimi Colyer moved to 10th place on the program’s career kills list.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The No. 13 Oregon volleyball team picked up its 20th win of the season with Thursday's road sweep over Michigan State. The Ducks had 11 service aces and reached double-digit blocks—10.5 total team blocks—for a fourth-consecutive match. With her match-high 12 kills, junior Mimi Colyer cracked the Oregon career top-10 list.
The Ducks are now 20-6 overall with a 12-5 mark in Big Ten play with their 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 win.
Needing just one kill to move into a tie with Madeline Ernst (1995-98) for 10th place, Colyer took sole possession of the spot with a kill of the MSU block. She is up to 1,364 career kills through the first 93 matches of her time in Green and Yellow. Colyer added seven blocks, six digs and a block against the Spartans.
Thursday's match was Oregon's third of the season with double-digit aces. Cristin Cline had a career-high four aces to lead the charge from the service line. Mackenzie Morris had three aces, followed by two from Michelle Ohwobete. Colyer and Isabel Patterson each had one in the sweep.
Morris led the floor defense with 11 digs. The Ducks limited MSU to a .108 hitting percentage.
How It Happened: Trailing by two early in the first, Oregon ripped off nine of the next 11 points to go ahead 16-11 on an attack error by the Spartans. Noemie Glover had three kills and a block during the run. The Ducks matched the five-point lead at 19-14 after kills from Ohwobete and Colyer before the home team put together a surge of its own.
Michigan State (11-17, 4-13) went on a 6-0 run to erase the deficit and take a 20-19 lead thanks to a kill by Taylor Preston. In another switch of momentum, the Ducks answered immediately by winning six of the final seven points of the set. UO took the 1-0 match lead on an attack error by the home team.
Glover finished the match with 10 kills while hitting .400 (10-2-20) against Michigan State. It's her third-consecutive match with double-digit kills. The sophomore opposite added two blocks to her stat line.
The Spartans shook off the first-set loss and raced out to a 9-4 advantage in the second, prompting the Ducks to call a timeout. Oregon responded and pulled even at 13-all after Ohwobete delivered an ace before putting down a kill out of the back row. A 7-1 UO run was the difference in the set, resulting in a 20-16 lead.
The Ducks won the final three points of the set, capping the frame with a kill by Colyer.
The teams traded points early in the third but the score tied at 9-9, Oregon rattled off six of seven with the help of four-consecutive blocks. The tandem of Colyer and Colby Neal accounted for three of those blocks. Oregon led 15-10 at the end of the surge and held a lead of at least three for the remainder of the match.
Michigan State fought off one match point but on her team's second chance to close things out, Colyer posted the final tally with another kill.
Notable: Fifth 20-win season under head coach Matt Ulmer; fourth in a row … 100th conference victory for Ulmer (100-55) between the Pac-12 and Big Ten.
Up Next: Oregon heads to Ann Arbor to face Michigan in Saturday's weekend finale (4 p.m. PT, B1G+). The Ducks' next home match—and last of the regular season—is Wed., Nov. 27, when they host No. 8 Purdue inside Matthew Knight Arena at 7:30 p.m.
