Another Sweep For Ducks In Michigan
11/23/24 | Women's Volleyball
The Oregon volleyball team won in three sets Saturday over the Wolverines, two days after a sweep at Michigan State.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michelle Ohwobete hit .435 on her way to 12 kills and Mimi Colyer led the Ducks with 14 on Saturday, as the No. 13 Oregon volleyball team finished off its second sweep of the week.
The Ducks (21-7, 13-5 Big Ten) followed a three-set win at Michigan State on Thursday by beating the Wolverines in kind, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22. Oregon heads into the final week of the regular season looking to finish strong and remain in the hunt for the right to host NCAA Tournament play come December.
Oregon hit .239 as a team Saturday and limited Michigan to .117 hitting. Onye Ofoegbu had eight kills and Noemie Glover added seven, and they helped the Ducks to an 11-6 advantage in blocks.
How It Happened: The Ducks never trailed in the opening set, jumping out to a lead and then holding off a charge by the Wolverines mid-set. Colby Neal contributed to consecutive blocks to open the match, helping Oregon jump out to a 6-2 lead.
Michigan surged to tie the set at 8-8, but Colyer recorded a kill to deny the Wolverines a lead. It was 9-9 when the Ducks scored five of the next six to lead 14-10, before Michigan put together a similar run to close within 17-16. Again Colyer regained momentum for the Ducks, and they closed out the set with three straight — including consecutive blocks to end the set, with Ofoegbu assisting on both.
The second set played out in similar fashion, as Ohwobete had two kills to help the UO women jump out to a 7-2 lead. Colyer had a pair of kills during a 4-0 run that made it 11-5, and an ace from Ohwobete pushed Oregon's lead to 17-9.
But again Michigan rallied, scoring six of seven to close within 19-16. Ofoegbu had two kills as Oregon scored three of four to go up 22-17, but four straight by the Wolverines got them within 22-21. Ulmer used a timeout to great effect, however, and the Ducks got a kill from Colyer followed by two straight from Ohwobete to close out the set.
Oregon again started strong in the third, with Ofoegbu assisting on two blocks as the Ducks got out to a 4-2 lead. But when it was 5-3, Michigan scored eight of the next 11 and took its largest lead of the night, 11-8.
Oregon still trailed by three at 14-11 when momentum flipped — Ofoegbu, Colyer, Cristin Cline and Ohwobete all had kills as the Ducks scored eight of nine to lead 19-15. The Wolverines had one more rally, scoring four straight to tied it, 19-19. But another Ulmer timeout stabilized the Ducks, and Ohwobete had two kills as Oregon scored four of the next five to take command of the set on the way to clinching the sweep.
Up Next: The Ducks play their final home match of the regular season against Purdue on Wednesday (7:30 p.m., Big Ten Network).
