Ducks Fall in Five at No. 23 USC
11/17/24 | Women's Volleyball
Libero Mackenzie Morris reached 2,000 career digs in Sunday’s five setter.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 match lead but No. 23 USC pulled off the reverse sweep Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center. Mimi Colyer and Mackenzie Morris led all players with 23 kills and 24 digs, respectively. With her effort, Morris reached the 2,000 milestone for her career between Oregon and Kansas State.
The Ducks enter the final two weeks of the regular season at 19-6 overall with a 11-5 mark in Big Ten play.
On the heels of Friday's 19 digs against Northwestern, Morris needed just two digs Sunday to join the 2,000 digs club. She picked up seven of her season-high 24 digs in the opening set, and with her latest outing, is now averaging 3.79 digs per set against Big Ten opponents.
Colyer led a trio of Ducks in double figures with her 23 kills, good for her third 20-kill effort of the year. The Lincoln, Calif., native hit .315 against the Women of Troy and completed her team-leading seventh double-double with 13 digs. Colyer matched her career high with seven blocks and added two aces.
Michelle Ohwobete had a double-double of her own with 17 kills and 12 digs while Noemie Glover put down 13 kills while hitting .440 to go along with eight blocks.
Collectively, Oregon registered a season-high 21.0 total team blocks, surpassing its previous best of 20 blocks against BYU (Sept. 23). It also marks the second-highest total in program history during the rally scoring era, trailing only the 23 blocks by the 2006 team against Arizona State. Onye Ofoegbu got in on 11 blocks to establish a new career high.
Sunday marked Oregon's first loss when holding an opponent under a .200 hitting percentage. Despite the setback, the Ducks held USC (18-8, 10-6 Big Ten) to a .185 efficiency. It was also their first loss after winning the first set.
How It Happened: The teams traded 4-0 runs to start the decisive fifth set with UO pulling even on a Glover-Ofoegbu tandem block. At the switch, the Ducks led 8-6 after an ace by Colyer. USC answered with a four-point surge, using a pair of blocks to take a 10-8 advantage but Oregon responded with a quick two points to tie the score again and force USC to call a timeout.
The fifth set featured nine ties, five of those from 10-all through the remainder of the match. USC took advantage of four Oregon service errors down the stretch to arrive at match point but Colyer extended play with her final kill to tie things at 14-all. However, the Women of Troy secured the five-set win with the next two points, getting a kill from Ally Batenhorst to end the final rally.
Batenhorst and Adonia Faumuina led USC with 18 and 17 kills, respectively.
The Ducks seemed poised for a Sunday sweep after going up 2-0 and taking a 12-8 lead in the third set. USC rattled off seven of the next eight points for a 15-13 advantage at the media timeout. Later in the set with the score tied at 16-all, the home team used another surge—time this a 5-1 run—to take over control of play.
USC carried the momentum to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set. The Women of Troy led by as many as five points, lastly at 19-14, before Oregon mounted a comeback. Glover and Ofoegbu teamed up for a block to trim the deficit to two, forcing USC to call a timeout at 21-19. Out of the huddle, the Ducks kept the pressure on and pulled even at 22-all with a kill by Ohwobete.
The teams traded kills to push the score to 23-23 but USC got the final two points to force the fifth.
Up Next: Oregon heads east next weekend for matches at Michigan State (Nov. 21) and Michigan (Nov. 23). Both contests will be streamed on B1G+. The Ducks' next home match is Wed., Nov. 27, when they host top-10 opponent Purdue at Matthew Knight Arena.
