Ducks Fall in Four at No. 9 Wisconsin
10/18/24 | Women's Volleyball
No. 11 Oregon is now 13-3 overall with a 5-2 record in Big Ten play.
MADISON, Wis. — The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team had nine aces and got 16 kills from Mimi Colyer Friday evening but dropped a four-set road result to ninth-ranked Wisconsin. With the loss, the Ducks are now 13-3 this season with a 5-2 mark in Big Ten play.
Colyer reached at least 16 kills for the seventh time this season, and for the third-consecutive outing. She added nine digs, four blocks and an ace against the Badgers. Michelle Ohwobete tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while Noemie Glover and Onye Ofoegbu each put away nine kills.
The Ducks' nine service aces are their highest total during conference play, and the team's most since having 13 aces against BYU (Sept. 13). Senior libero Mackenzie Morris matched her season high with three aces followed by two each from Ohwobete and Cristin Cline. The redshirt freshman setter added 43 assists and nine digs to her stat line.
Oregon had 9.5 total team blocks Friday and were out-blocked for just the second time this year. The Badgers finished the night with 10 blocks.
How It Happened: With the first set tied at 8-all, Ohwobete and Colby Neal teamed up for a block for the Ducks' first lead of the match. Oregon led 15-13 at the media timeout. However, the home squad rattled off eight of the last 10 points including the final five for the 25-19 set win and 1-0 match lead.
Neal joined Colyer for the team lead with four blocks.
Wisconsin (12-4, 6-1) tallied the first point of the second but the Ducks responded with a 5-1 push, a lead they would not give back. The advantage was 11-6 after another kill from Colyer which forced a timeout by the Badgers. Despite Oregon not relinquishing the lead, the score was tied six times down the stretch.
At 20-20, the Ducks created a two-point cushion with a kill from Ohwobete and an ace off the hand of Cline. An attack error by Wisconsin gave Oregon three set points at 24-21. Ofoegbu closed out the set with a solo block of Anna Smrek to even the match. It was Wisconsin's first set loss at home this year.
After a back-and-forth start to the third, the Badgers steadily extended its lead to 16-10 to force head coach Matt Ulmer into a timeout. Wisconsin led by as many as eight points and arrived at set point on an attack error by Glover. The Ducks fought off three set points with kills from Ohwobete and Ofoegbu followed by an ace by Ohwobete before the home team took the frame—25-19—for the 2-1 lead.
The Badgers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set and eventually built an 11-4 advantage, forcing Ulmer to use his second timeout. Oregon pulled to within five—down 22-17—with Ofoegbu's final kill. Glover saved a match point with her ninth kill but, on the ensuing rally, a Wisconsin block was the final blow.
The Badgers' Sarah Franklin led all players with 17 kills.
Notable: Friday's match was played in front of 7,229 fans at the UW Field House … Ofoegbu was one of 16 players added to the AVCA Division I Player of the Year watch list that was announced Friday … joins Colyer who was part of the initial AVCA list that was released in September.
Up Next: Oregon closes out the road trip Sunday at Iowa (10 a.m. PT, B1G+). The teams will be playing for just the second time, and first since 1987. The Hawkeyes won that previous meeting, a 3-1 decision on their home floor.
