Ducks Drop Tight Battle to Charlotte
01/27/24 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Oregon women's tennis team clinched the doubles point and led Charlotte 2-1, but the 49ers rallied for a 4-2 win Saturday on the final day of the ITA Kickoff at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Charlotte, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago, won three straight singles matches to complete its comeback victory.
The doubles points came down to an extra-point tiebreaker at third doubles after the Ducks and 49ers split the top two doubles matches. Candela Aparisi and Karin Young outlasted Charlotte's Lucie Petruzelova and Emma Wilkins 7-6 (6) to give Oregon a 1-0 lead headed to singles.
Jo-Yee Chan and Nina Geissler came away with a 6-3 win at No. 2 after UO's top pairing of Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral fell 4-6.
After Charlotte evened the score with a straight-set win on Court 3, but Martinez Moral regained the lead for the Ducks with a 6-0, 6-3 victory on Court 5. The Niners then won the next two matches, both in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 4.
Trailing 3-2, Oregon needed to win the last two remaining matches – both of which went to a third set. Luescher overcame a 6-4 first-set loss to the nation's 98th-ranked player Lucia Quiterio, taking the second set by a score of 7-5. Quiterio rallied for a 6-4 win in the third set, earning the match's deciding point.
Young and Shona Nakona traded tiebreaker-set victories at the sixth position, but went unfinished in the third set once the match was clinched.
Oregon returns home and begins a four-match homestand Friday against Eastern Washington at 12 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
