03/18/23 | Track and Field
The Ducks are off to San Diego next week for the SDSU Aztec Invitational (March 23-25).
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon track and field team tallied three top-10 program performances and seven wins Saturday—eight for the weekend—during the Oregon Preview at Hayward Field. In her debut as a Duck, junior Shelby Moran won the hammer throw while becoming the No. 4 performer in the event in program history.
The Sherwood, Ore., native wasted no time with a throw of 64.42m/211-4 on her first attempt to post the winning mark. All six throws were 61 meters and beyond, and Moran won the event by more than 20 feet. She went on to add a third-place finish in the discus with a measure of 52.49m/172-2, good for the second-best mark of her collegiate career.
The throw also moved her into the top 10—at No. 9—on the UO all-time list. In the discus, Jaida Ross led a 2-3 finish for the Ducks with Moran, getting the implement out to a day's best of 54.31m/178-2 on her final attempt.
The throws crew accounted for two more wins Saturday with victories from Mason Strunk in the men's hammer (62.91m/206-5) and Kohana Nakato in the women's javelin (48.45m/158-11). Pac-12 champion Ty Hampton was second in the men's javelin after passing on his final three attempts. He got the javelin out to 66.37m/217-9 on his second throw of the season.
On the track, the UO women produced winning efforts in the 200 meters from Colleen Uzoekwe and in the 1500 meters from Mia Moerck. Uzoekwe (24.44) and fellow multis standout Taylor Chocek (24.77) went 1-2 in the event, each with lifetime bests. Moerck took control of the 1500 meters on the final lap to stop the clock in 4:27.32 and secure a victory.
In the men's pole vault, Hunter Angove and J Kai Yamafuji tied for the top clearance at 4.95m/16-2.75 but Angove came away with first place with one fewer miss during the competition. Freshman Isabella Nilsen finished second in the women's pole vault with a final clearance of 3.95m/12-11.5, becoming the No. 10 performer in Oregon history in the event.
Sophomore Hannah Ganashamoorthy was first in the women's long jump, holding on to a lead she held for the final five rounds of the competition. On her final jump, she got out to 5.78m/18-11.75 to add to the winning margin of more than a foot. Ganashamoorthy was also third in the 100 meters (12.37).
