Ducks’ Rally Attempt Comes Up Short
04/10/21 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon men's tennis team couldn't overcome an early deficit Saturday in a 6-1 loss at Washington. Facing a 3-1 hole, the Ducks had chances to extend play with a pair of three setters but the rally attempt came up short. With the setback, Oregon drops to 13-5 overall and 1-5 in league play.
How it Happened: For the first time in more than a month, the Ducks lost the doubles point. The home team posted wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to take the early 1-0 match lead. At the top spot, the UO pair of Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele led 4-3 when play was stopped after Washington clinched the point.
At No. 5 singles, Brandon Lam was the first UO player off court with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Adam Torocsik. Lam has won his last two matches and improves to 9-4 overall in singles play this season. The Huskies, however, led 3-1 after wins at No. 1 and 3 singles.
Washington (10-9, 1-5 Pac-12) won the first sets in five of six matches Saturday but Charlton and Luke Vandecasteele, at No. 2 and 6, respectively, each worked their way into a third set to keep the Ducks' hopes alive.
Vandecasteele grabbed an early break in the third of his match and Jesper Klöv-Nilsson was on his way to pulling even at No. 4 singles but the Huskies clinched the team win in a three setter at the two spot. Charlton led 3-2 in the final frame but Ewen Lumsden got a break to go ahead and held on for the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
The remaining two matches in play continued, both ending in favor of the Huskies.
Up Next: The Ducks have added a home match for Tuesday, April 13 against UTSA with first serve set for 3 p.m. (PT) at the UO Student Tennis Center. Oregon will host Stanford on April 16 in the team's regular-season finale. The team's April 18 match against Cal has been cancelled.
