Ducks Sweep Portland State
02/06/21 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team posted their second sweep of the season Saturday with its 7-0 win over Portland State (0-3) at the UO Student Tennis Center. With the result, the Ducks improve to 4-0 through the first two weekends of their 2021 dual season.
It was the Ducks' second win of the day over Portland State. In the first matchup, Oregon recorded a 6-1 win over the visiting Vikings.
"It's a long day and it's a physical day, as well," junior Joshua Charlton said. "That always makes it tough to keep focused throughout a long period of time. With the group of guys we have, we get along so well so there's no stress.
"We had a good win this morning and then can just relax, have lunch, have a few laughs and take your mind off things for a bit. But as soon as we're back on court, we're locked in. It was tough but it was a good day for us."
The Vandecasteele brothers posted the first win of the evening, rattling off six games in a row to win 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. The home team secured the point with a 6-2 victory by Jesper Klov-Nilsson and Giorgio Soemarno at the third spot. After dropping their first match of the year, Luke Vandecasteele and Quinn Vandecasteele have won three straight with just six games lost during the stretch.
Oregon made it sweep with a come-from-behind victory for Charlton and Brandon Lam at No. 1 doubles. The Ducks lost the first three games of the match and trailed 4-1 in the tiebreaker but came away with a 7-6(5) win at the top spot. Charlton and Lam are now 4-0 this season.
In singles play, the Ducks took a 3-0 match lead with consecutive wins from Quinn and Luke at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Playing in the five spot, Klov-Nilsson beat Sam Roberts in straights to clinch his second team win of the season. He also clinched the Ducks' Jan. 30 victory over BYU.
Charlton, the 30th-ranked player in the country, took down Matteo Fortini with a 6-2, 6-4 score line. On the heels of a win at No. 6 singles by freshman Ryoma Matsushita, the Ducks finished off their second sweep of the season with a 6-1, 6-7(2), 1-0(5) victory by Brandon Lam at No. 4 singles.
