Ducks Sweep Home-Opening Weekend
03/08/20 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – For the second straight day, Oregon swept a doubleheader at home getting a walk-off win in extras over Seattle in game one and a 12-2 run-rule victory against Portland State in game two Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks moved to 21-2 on the season – tied for the second-best start in school history – as they get set to take on Saint Mary's before opening conference play next weekend at California.
Game 1 (Oregon 3, Seattle 2) – Deijah Pangilinan delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to lift Oregon past Seattle, 3-2, in eight innings.
How it Happened: Seattle threatened to score in the top half of the eighth, but Samaria Diaz came on in relief of Brooke Yanez and kept them off the board. With a runner placed on second to start the eighth due to the international tiebreaker rule, Seattle's Madison Cathcart drew a walk before both moved up a bag on a flyout. Diaz retired the next two batters, though, getting a flyout to shallow left and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the home half of the eighth, Vallery Wong was placed on second to start and advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Pangilinan then lifted a 1-1 pitch to relatively deep right field, allowing Wong to score ahead of the tag from third.
Seattle put the first two runs of the game on the board, with single runs on sacrifice flies in the second and third innings. Pangilinan put the first Oregon run up with a sacrifice fly in the third, before the Terra McGowan came in to score following an error.
Game 1 Box Score Notes: Yanez struck out double-digit batters for the third time this season, fanning 11 over seven innings with just two walks … Diaz improved to 8-0 on the season … Ducks' pitching reached 10 strikeouts in a game for the ninth time this year … Pangilinan delivered her second multi-RBI game of the weekend and third of the season … Oregon won its first extra-inning game since April 27, 2018, when it beat Washington in nine innings.
Game 2 (Oregon 10, Seattle 2) – Oregon blew things open with a seven-run second inning, highlighted by Jasmine Sievers' grand slam, in a 12-2 run-rule victory over Portland State.
How it Happened: The Ducks failed to score first for the second straight game after Portland State got a run in the first, but Oregon answered immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first. Bunker opened the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line before coming around to score on a Maddie Hopper infield hit.
Rachel Cid drew a bases-loaded walk to put up the first of seven runs in the second, before Bunker and Pangilinan each delivered RBI singles. After a fielder's choice, Sievers came up with two outs and the bases juiced and hit a towering shot out to left center field to make it 10-2 and put the rout on. Cid added two more in the third inning, blasting a two-run no-doubter to left, scoring McGowan and making it 12-2.
UO starter Jordan Dail overcame a rocky start to set down the final seven batters she faced, recording three up, three down innings in the third and fourth. Makenna Kliethermes made her first appearance at The Jane in the fifth inning, setting the Vikings down in order, shutting the door with back-to-back strikeouts.
Game 2 Box Score Notes: The seven-run second inning marked the sixth time this year that the Ducks put up five or more runs in an inning … Cid, Bunker and Sievers combined to drive in 10 of the 12 runs, with Sievers picking up all four of her RBIs on the grand slam and Cid and Bunker driving in three each … Additionally, Bunker went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored … McGowan scored a season-high three runs while finishing 2-for-2 … Cruse has now hit safely in the last eight games and 13 of the last 14 after going 2-for-3 with two runs scored … She now has a team-high 12 multi-hit games.
Overall Notables: The Ducks are now tied with the 2014 and 2007 teams for the second-fastest to 21 wins in a season, and trail only the 2017 team that won its first 35 games … Oregon allowed its first runs in the first two innings of a game, giving up three total in the doubleheader, but is still outscoring teams 71-3 in innings one and two this year … Bunker and Cruse remain hitting above the .450 mark for the season, with Cruse batting .468 and Bunker hitting .455 … Seven different Oregon players have now driven in 10-plus runs this year through 23 games … Diaz and Yanez now both have eight wins on the season, while Dail got her fifth victory.
On Deck: The Ducks head down to the Bay Area next week, playing at Saint Mary's on Wednesday at 2 p.m. before opening Pac-12 play at California on Friday.
