Yanez Dominates in Shutout of Saint Mary’s
03/11/20 | Softball
MORAGA, Calif. – Brooke Yanez rolled through six shutout innings of one-hit ball with seven strikeouts, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in No. 9 Oregon's 4-0 win over Saint Mary's Wednesday at Cottrell Field.
The Ducks will take a 22-2 record into the start of the Pac-12 play Friday at California having already matching last season's win total and tied for the second-best start to a season in program history.
How it Happened: Yanez allowed just one runner to advance past second base all game, setting the Gaels down in order in three different innings. She stranded a pair of runners on in the second inning after she walked a pair of batters, going on to retire 10 of the next 11 she faced from the end of the second inning through the first out of the sixth. Yanez again worked out of trouble in that inning, leaving runners at first and third before Samaria Diaz came in and tossed a perfect seventh.
Oregon struck first with a two-out run in the second inning. Terra McGowan delivered the first of three straight two-out singles with a base hit to right before stealing second. Jasmine Sievers picked her up with her own base knock to right, making it 1-0. The Ducks threatened to add more after a Vallery Wong single, but she was thrown out trying to move to second on a throw.
The Ducks put up another one in the fourth to make it 2-0. McGowan walked with one out before Sievers singled and Wong laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit to load the bases. Mya Felder then came up and dropped an RBI single into left field to score McGowan. Oregon threatened to add more, but left the bases loaded.
Rachel Cid extended the Oregon lead in the top of the seventh, going the other way for a two-run homer to score Deijah Pangilinan and make it 4-0.
Notables: Yanez picked up her ninth win of the season, and lowered her season ERA to 1.56 … Cid turned in her second three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs … She extended her team-lead in the home run department with her seventh, just two shy of her total from all of last year … Sievers recorded her fourth multi-hit performance of the year, going 2-for-4 with an RBI … Wong turned in her first career multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 …
