Dail's Second No-Hitter Gets Ducks Back on Track
03/27/19 | Softball
STOCKTON, Calif. – Sophomore Jordan Dail threw her second no-hitter of the season on Wednesday night to get the Oregon softball team back to its winning ways in a 5-0 victory over Pacific at Bill Simoni Field.
Dail (10-8) struck out a career-high 13 batters and allowed just two runners to get into scoring position all night in her second no-hitter and third complete-game shutout of the year. The Ducks (12-16) snapped a 12-game skid with the win and got a stretch of 11 straight road games off to a strong start.
How it Happened: Dail walked her second batter of the night, but she struck out the next hitter and Shaye Bowden threw the runner out trying to steal to end the opening frame. Dail struck out the next five hitters she faced and retired seven straight before a leadoff walk in the fourth, and the lefty quickly got back on track with three strikeouts in a row to end the inning.
Pacific (14-16) threatened for the first and only time against Dail in the fifth inning, when a pair of walks and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Dail fielded her position to end the threat and the inning, and then threw a 1-2-3 sixth. The Forest, Va., native walked the second batter of the seventh inning, but came back to strike out the final two batters to establish a new career-high and secure the no-hitter and the win.
The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second inning. Jasmine Sievers put Oregon up 1-0 lead with an RBI single up the middle to score Haley Cruse, who opened the inning with a single and a stolen base. Senior April Utecht followed with a booming two-run home run to center field to give Dail a three-run cushion.
Oregon added a pair of insurance runs in the final two innings, with freshman Hannah Galey bringing in a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single. Sievers capped a big night at the plate in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right field.
At the Plate: Sievers enjoyed a perfect 3-for-3 night with two RBIs and was a home run shy of the cycle with a single, double and a triple, and Utecht took over the team lead in both home runs (5) and RBIs (18). Bowden notched a pair of hits, Galey went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cruse was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored while wreaking havoc on the base paths with a career-high three steals.
No-Hitter: Dail fired the 32nd no-hitter in program history, and became just the fourth Duck ever to throw multiple seven-inning no-hitters in the same season.
Notable: The Ducks stole a season-high seven bases, including Cruse's three and the first career steal for senior Bayley Bruner, a four-year letterwinner for Oregon Soccer … Bowden's runner caught stealing in the first inning was her 11th of the season, the most in the Pac-12 … Cruse's two walks raised her team-leading total to 22 this season … Freshman Rachel Cid, a native of Tracy, Calif., had a huge cheering section on hand, including the Tracy High School softball team.
Up Next: Oregon will bus to Stanford for a three-game series against the Cardinal beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
