Pac-12 Opener Goes to No. 12 Arizona
03/15/19 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon softball team lost its 2019 Pac-12 opener, 8-0, to No. 12 Arizona on Friday night at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
The Ducks (11-11, 0-1 Pac-12) struggled to get things going at the plate against Arizona ace Taylor McQuillin, who fired a two-hit shutout to give the Wildcats game one of the three-game series in Tucson.
How it Happened: Freshman Allee Bunker bounced a one-out single through the right side in the top of the first, but McQuillin would retire the next 16 batters in order. Cherish Burks beat out an infield single with two outs in the sixth, but a groundout ended the inning and Oregon didn't get a chance to bat in the seventh as the Wildcats put the run rule in effect in the bottom of the sixth.
Arizona (19-7, 1-0 Pac-12) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning via a solo home run and a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats added solo home runs in the third and the fourth innings to give McQuillin a four-run cushion and then pushed four across in the sixth, including their fourth home run of the night, to end the game.
At the Plate: Bunker and Burks accounted for Oregon's two hits off of McQuillin (8-5), who struck out eight and did not surrender a walk over six scoreless innings.
In the Circle: Sophomore Jordan Dail (9-6) took the loss after allowing eight runs with a strikeout over 5.2 innings.
Up Next: The Ducks will look to even the series and snap a seven-game losing streak in game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT (Pac-12 Networks).
