TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon softball team dropped game two of the three-game series against No. 12 Arizona, 8-0, on Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats secured the series win at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
How it Happened: Arizona (20-7, 2-0 Pac-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run home run by Dejah Mulipola, her fifth long ball in as many games.
The Ducks (11-12, 0-2 Pac-12) had their best scoring chance of the day in the second when Haley Cruse singled and Jasmine Sievers walked with one out, but a pair of popouts ended the inning and kept Oregon off the board.
Sophomore Jordan Dail (9-7) worked 1-2-3 innings in the second and third, but Mulipola struck again with a solo homer in the fourth to make it 4-0. Freshman Kailey Krueger took over with two in scoring position and one out and nearly worked out of it after striking out her first batter, but Arizona extended its lead to 7-0 with its third home run of the day.
Oregon couldn't take advantage of a leadoff single by April Utecht in the top of the fifth, and Arizona scored one more in the bottom half to clinch the series with a run-rule win.
At the Plate: Cruse, Utecht and Allee Bunker all singled for Oregon's three hits, and Sievers drew the lone walk of the game. Bunker extended her hitting streak to four games with a one-out hit in the third.
In the Circle: Dail was effective but was hurt by the long ball, allowing six runs with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Krueger struck out two while giving up one earned run in 1.1 innings of relief.
Up Next: Oregon will look to avoid a sweep in the desert and snap an eight-game losing streak on Sunday in the final game of the series (12 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks).
