Sixteen teams will be competing this weekend in Clearwater, including nine NFCA ranked teams in No. 1 Florida State, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 8 LSU, No. 11 Texas, No. 18 Kentucky, No. 19 Oregon, No. 20 Oklahoma State and No. 23 James Madison. California, Florida Atlantic, Hofstra, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Utah round out the field.
Hot-Swinging Ducks Open Season With 5-0 Weekend at Kajikawa Classic
Despite a roster with 14 newcomers and 10 freshmen, the Ducks showcased a mature approach at the plate last weekend in Tempe while sweeping their way through the Kajikawa Classic. Oregon hit .389 as a team while outscoring opponents 53-20, and the Ducks drew 33 total walks compared to only 18 strikeouts. SO UT Shaye Bowden hit an even .500 to lead the offensive outpour, SR OF Cherish Burks quietly got off to a .471 start and Oregon's five starting freshmen combined to hit .426 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs.
Cid Wins Pac-12 Freshman of the Week
FR IF Rachel Cid hit a whopping .471 (8-for-17) with three home runs and a team-high 10 RBIs to help lead the Ducks' offensive attack at the Kajikawa Classic, earning the first Pac-12 freshman of the week honor of the 2019 season. Cid was especially stellar in her collegiate debut vs. Kansas, going 3-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and two walks, and then added home runs against CSUN and Bradley. The Tracy, Calif., native is slugging an even 1.000 through her first five collegiate games, and she has five total walks for a team-best .591 on-base percentage.
Freshmen Come Out Swinging
Rachel Cid wasn't the only Oregon freshmen to get their collegiate careers off to hot starts. FR UT Hannah Galey started all five games at first base and was an impact bat at the plate, hitting .400 with three home runs and nine RBIs. Galey blasted a pair of homers in UO's season-opening win over Kansas, and then added a huge three-run bomb to give Oregon a 6-5 lead over Seattle in the bottom of the fifth inning. FR IF Allee Bunker hit .368 on the weekend with three stolen bases and a team-high nine runs scored, including four against Kansas, and FR OF Lexi Wagner drove in six runs while hitting .357. FR IF Jasmine Sievers made her collegiate debut vs. Seattle after missing the first four games with an injury, and Oregon's top-ranked recruit went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer two batters after Galey's to help the Ducks down the Redhawks. Overall, the five freshmen combined to hit .426 with seven home runs, 29 RBIs and 28 runs scored.
Dail Deals in First Weekend as a Duck
SO LHP Jordan Dail, a transfer from Virginia Tech, made an immediate impact in her first weekend as a Duck and showed potential to become Oregon's next great ace. Dail went 3-0 at the Kajikawa Classic, posting a 2.51 ERA with 26 strikeouts across 22.1 innings pitched. After opening her Oregon career with 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings against Kansas, Dail was especially good in Oregon's 6-1 win over Missouri, allowing just one run with six strikeouts over a complete-game effort. The Forest, Va., native leads the Pac-12 in strikeouts and innings pitched through the first weekend of the season.
Bowden Showcases Super-Utility Ability
After playing sparingly as a freshman in 2018, SO UT Shaye Bowden will likely be used in multiple roles around the field for the Ducks in 2019. The Phoenix, Ariz., native played second base in Oregon's first four games last weekend in Tempe, but moved to catcher as FR IF Jasmine Sievers made her debut at shortshop and FR IF Allee Bunker slid over to second. Bowden did not make an error all weekend, and she gunned down a runner trying to steal second with a perfect throw in the second inning vs. Seattle. Bowden will likely split catching duties with SR C/1B April Utecht throughout the year, while also seeing time at second and possibly in the outfield. Bowden is Oregon's leading hitter entering this weekend after hitting an even .500 with a home run, double, triple and six RBIs in Tempe.
Top-25 Streak
After rising six spots to No. 19 in the week-one edition of the USA Today/NFCA poll, Oregon softball has now been ranked in the top 25 of the NFCA poll for 136 straight weeks (preseason and postseason polls included). The Ducks climbed to No. 23 in week 10 of the 2010 season and have never dipped below that mark since. UO opened the 2019 season at No. 25.
Up Next
Oregon will head to Cathedral City, Calif., next weekend to play six games in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
