Ducks Beat Minnesota in Kick-Off Opener
01/26/19 | Men's Tennis
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Oregon men's tennis team opened the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-1 win over Minnesota. The victory sets up a matchup with conference foe and 10th-ranked Stanford on Sunday at Taube Tennis Stadium.
The Ducks are now 3-0 this year. The winner of Oregon-Stanford will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Illinois.
"What a great team win over a Minnesota program that advanced to the Sweet 16 last year," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "We were in a huge hole in doubles but fought back and saved five match points that would have given them the doubles point.
"That momentum carried over into singles and we got the second and third points rather quickly. It was great to see our freshman Josh Charlton serve and close it out with so much composure."
Minnesota (2-1) took the opening match of doubles play at the top spot but the Ducks rallied for wins on the No. 2 and 3 courts to secure the doubles point. The UO duo of Emmanuel Coste and Thomas Laurent posted a 7-5 win for the opening point and the 1-0 match lead.
With the match tied 1-1, Oregon created separation on the scoreboard with wins by Laurent at the No. 1 spot and Ty Gentry in the third position. Laurent, the No. 5 player in the country, had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Josip Krstanovic for the 85thsingles win of his career.
Charlton clinched the match for the Ducks with a 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Justyn Levin in the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Charlton also scored the clinching point for Oregon in its season-opening win over Idaho.
