Ducks Sweep Utah Valley to Open Oregon Classic

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 18 Oregon volleyball team kicked off the Oregon Classic on Friday afternoon with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-12 sweep of Utah Valley in Matthew Knight Arena.
Oregon (1-0) hit .286 and held Utah Valley (2-3) to a .085 mark to win the first of two matches for the Ducks on Friday. UO will be back in action at 8 p.m. PT to face Long Beach State.
Oregon led 3-1 to start the second, but Utah Valley battled back to take a 14-12 lead. The Ducks and Wolverines went back and forth to a 19-18 UVU lead before a Sumeet Gill kill ignited Oregon runs of 3-0 and 5-1 to put the Ducks ahead. Trailing 23-20, Utah Valley used three straight points to pull even, but Borup brought UO out of a timeout with a kill before a UVU error gave the Ducks the set and a 2-0 advantage.
The Wolverines held a brief 8-7 lead in the third set, but it was all Oregon the rest of the way as the Ducks scored 18 of the final 22 points to secure the sweep. Back-to-back kills by Borup started a 4-0 run to give Oregon the lead, and the Ducks finished the match on a 12-0 run that included five UO kills. Oregon held UVU to a .000 hitting percentage in the final set.
Who Stood Out: Johnson hit an efficient .565 while leading the Ducks with 14 kills, and Borup added 11 while hitting .273. August Raskie notched her second double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs while adding three kills and four blocks, Lindsey Vander Weide dug 16 balls and Ronika Stone led all players with seven blocks to go with five kills. Freshman libero Brooke Nuneviller led the way with 18 digs and also added a pair of aces.
Notable: Raskie moved into the top 10 all-time at Oregon after running her career assist total to 1,610 … Johnson added six blocks to go with her 14 kills … Oregon is now 3-0 all-time against Utah Valley … The Ducks have now won two matches in a row and six straight sets.

How it Happened: The Ducks controlled the opening game from the outset, hitting .344 behind five kills apiece by Willow Johnson and Taylor Borup to take a 1-0 lead. Oregon jumped out to an initial 5-1 lead, and back-to-back Johnson kills ignited a 5-0 run that made it 13-6.
