No.3 Blue Devils Outlast Ducks In Hard Fought Regional Final

DURHAM, N.C. – The Oregon women's tennis team left it all on the court in Saturday's NCAA Tournament second round match, but in the end No. 3 Duke proved to be too much recording a 4-2 victory to end UO's tournament run.
"Another hard fought battle," said head coach Alison Silverio. "We certainly had our opportunities, but could not quite shut the door. Congratulations to Duke for advancing. They were able to convert in the tough moments better today."
How it Happened: The Ducks (16-10, 5-5) and Blue Devils battled back and forth from the onset in a heated battle for the doubles point.
The Blue Devils started things off with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot, but Senior Alyssa Tobita and sophomore Rifanty Kahfiani evened the score with a huge 6-2 victory over Duke's No. 6 duo of Samantha Harris and Kelly Chen, their highest ranked win of the year.

With the point up for grabs, Shweta Sangwan and Julia Eshet fought to a 4-4 draw with the ninth-ranked pair of Kaitlyn McCarthy and and Ellyse Hamlin.
McCarthy and Hamlin went on to win the next two games, and the match, to clinch the doubles point for Duke.
The Blue Devils extended their lead in singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot, but Sangwan responded for UO by defeating No. 55 Meible Chi, 6-1, 6-2, to make it 2-1.

Freshman Paiton Wagner put the Ducks on level terms after topping Hannah Zhao 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.

Despite tying the match 2-2, UO had some ground to cover as the Blue Devils won the opening sets on all three remaining courts after Julia Lilien and Tobita dropped their respective first set tiebreakers.
Duke fended off the late rally attempt as No. 28 Chen downed Daniela Nasser, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 position before McCarthy clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Lilien.
Notable: With her win today, Sangwan finishes the year 4-4 against ranked foes, closing out the year with three straight wins … The Ducks finished the season with a 16-10 record, marking the UO's best finish since 2005 when Oregon went 17-8.

On takeaways from today's match...
"We will learn from today's experience and recap all of our important lessons from the entire season. These adverse situations will only make us better. I'm excited to challenge our program and to keep pushing for new heights. The best is yet to come!"
Looking Ahead: Although the Ducks' team season is over, Tobita will return to North Carolina later this month to play in the NCAA Singles Tournament beginning May 23.
