Upset Bid Falls Short In 4-3 Thriller Against UCLA
04/26/18 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team had No. 13 UCLA on the ropes with the match tied 3-3, but the Ducks could not pull off the upset, falling to the Bruins, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament Thursday.
How it Happened: After falling behind 2-0 to the Bruins, junior Shweta Sangwan got the Ducks (15-9, 5-5) on the board defeating No. 30 Jada Hart, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot.
Freshman Julia Lilien followed suit at the No. 3 spot, downing UCLA's Terri Fleming, 6-4, 7-5, to tie it up, 2-2.
Fellow freshman Paiton Wagner attempted to make it three in a row for UO by forcing a third set at No. 6. Wagner battled No. 117 Alaina Miller into a second set tiebreaker, but eventually fell, 6-1, 7-6.
Daniela Nasser kept the Ducks alive, recording her first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 59 Abi Altick, 7-5, 6-2, to tie the match 3-3.
With a spot in the semifinals on the line, it all came down to sophomore Julia Eshet at the No. 5 spot.
After dropping her opening set to the Bruins' Ayan Broomfield, 7-5, Eshet looked to force a third, tying the second set 4-4. But that would be as close as she would get as Broomfield took the final two games to win 7-5, 6-4 and clinch the match victory for UCLA.
Notable: With her win, Sangwan improved to 3-4 on the year against ranked opponents while snapping a four-match losing streak … Despite the loss, Nasser extended her singles winning streak to four matches.
Up Next: The Ducks will wait to see their fate in the NCAA Tournament, with the selection show airing next Tuesday, May 1.
