Ducks Drop Tough Match To No. 7 Georgia Tech
02/04/18 | Women's Tennis
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Oregon women's tennis team's upset bid against No. 7 Georgia Tech came up short Sunday morning, as the Ducks fell to the Yellow Jackets, 5-2, in Atlanta.
How it Happened: It was a less than ideal homecoming for head coach Alison Silverio in her return trip to Georgia State. The Ducks (4-2) battled the Yellow Jackets in doubles play trading games early on, but the Yellow Jackets would pull away to secure the point.
In a rematch of this year's ITA Fall Nationals round of 16, No. 17 Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan took on No. 5 Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones. The Duck duo hung tough trailing 4-3 early on, but the Georgia Tech pair would hang on to win at the No. 1 spot recording a 6-3 win.
In singles play, the Ducks squared off against three ranked opponents at the top three spots.
In her first loss at the No. 1 spot this season, Tobita fell to No. 49 Hourigan, 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Sangwan picked up her second straight win of the weekend over a ranked foe playing No. 79 Johnnise Renaud. The junior made quick work of her opponent recording a 6-2, 6-1 victory to put UO on the board.
In the final ranked match of the day sophomore Julia Eshet ran into No. 89 Ida Jarlskog. The Hollywood, Fla., native played it close in the opening set, but ultimately fell to Jarlskog, 6-3, 6-0.
The Ducks' only other singles victory came at the No. 4 spot as Daniela Nasser held off Victoria Flores for the win. In only her second two-set match of the season, Nasser won the second set tiebreaker to win the match, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Quotable: Head Coach Alison Silverio
On the Ducks play this weekend...
"It was another positive weekend for our team. Today was a tough battle, but again we learned more valuable lessons. Our belief and trust are growing and we will continue to prepare in the right way. Also, we want to personally thank our friends and families on both sides for making it a great match atmosphere this weekend. We are grateful for all of you!"
Up Next: the Ducks return home for the first time in nearly a month as they take on Northwestern Saturday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. PT.
