EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team had a respite from their recent dramatics, securing a decisive 6-1 win over Idaho to close out the weekend at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks (8-3) opened the match with their same two pairs at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot from the previous match against Baylor this past Friday.
Senior Alyssa Tobita and sophomore Rifanty Kahfiani nearly pulled off the match sweep racing out to a 6-1 win over Idaho's Maria Tavares and Laura Spataro. In their first-ever pairing senior Nia Rose and freshman Julia Lilien secured the point for Oregon at the No. 3 position with a 6-2 win.
The freshmen kept it rolling for UO in singles play as Paiton Wagner blanked UI's Marta Magalhaes in the second set, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
Lilien extended that lead shortly afterwards, downing Lucia Badillos, 6-3, 6-4, in her first career match at the No. 3 spot.
Sangwan clinched the win for UO seconds later, closing out her match over Tavares, 6-3, 6-3.
The Ducks kept their momentum going with wins from Julia Eshet at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-3, and Rose.
In her first singles match of the spring season, Rose's grit was on full display playing from behind throughout the first set. The New York City native, dominated the tiebreaker set, eventually going on to win the match, 7-6(2), 6-2.
Tobita looked to record the match sweep for the Ducks against No. 38 Marianna Petrei. After dropping the opening set, Tobita pushed Petrei to a third. The Mililani, Hawaii native, fended off two set points to keep Petrei on her toes, but could not complete the comeback falling to the 38th-ranked Vandal, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Notable: Rose was a picture of determination in her first singles match in over three months, improving to 4-4 on the year, and recording her first career win at the No. 6 spot … Tobita's match today marked the fifth straight ranked matchup for the senior, she is 2-3 in that span … Lilien recorded her fifth straight win to improve to 8-2 on the year … The Ducks remain undefeated at home with a 4-0 record, while picking up their third straight match victory.
Up Next: The Ducks continue their home stand taking on Fresno State Saturday, Mar. 3, in their final non-conference match of the season starting at 1 p.m. PT.
