Strong Second Round Has Ducks in Top Five
11/06/18 | Men's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Oregon tied for the lowest round of the day, shooting 8 under to move into fifth at 1 under in the Saint Mary's Invitational Tuesday at Poppy Hills Golf Club. Freshman Craig Ronne led the way with a 5-under 66 to move into second place alone in the individual race while Donald Kay and Edwin Yi also turned in under par rounds.
Ronne, a native of Klamath Falls, Ore., posted the lowest round by an Oregon freshman since Norman Xiong shot a 65 at the 2017 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
How it Happened: Ronne took advantage of the par 5s on the back nine, making birdie at 13 and eagle at 18 to make the turn at 3 under. He followed with a birdie at the par-5 first hole, but dropped a shot a hole later at the par-3 second. Ronne birdied the other two par-3s on the front nine – six and eight – to finish 5 under.
Yi turned in another quality round with a 2-under 69 and is tied for eighth. He made birdie on three of his first six holes before a bogey at 17 put him at 2 under after nine. Yi birdied the par-5 first hole, but bogeyed his next two holes before closing with a birdie at the ninth.
After going 3 over though his first 13 holes, Kay went 4 under over his final six holes to get into red numbers for the day. Coming off three consecutive bogeys at holes two through four, he birdied the fifth and sixth holes before a closing eagle at the par-5 ninth moved him to 1 under for the round.
Sam Foust shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 51st at 5 over and Ryan Gronlund finished with a 1-over 72 to go to 3 over for the tournament and is tied for 36th.
BYU continues to hold the lead after 36 holes at 19 under while the Cougars' Peter Kuest is seven shots clear of Ronne at 12 under.
Quotable: Head coach Casey Martin
"We did play well today. Craig Ronne sort of broke out and showed his potential which was great to see. We need to keep doing this though; can't just be a one day deal."
