Ducks Finish Sixth at Saint Mary’s Invitational
11/07/18 | Men's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Oregon finished sixth at 2 over, shooting 3 over in the final round of the Saint Mary's Invitational to wrap up the fall season at Poppy Hills Golf Club Wednesday. Sam Foust turned in the round of the day for the Ducks with a 3-under 68 while Craig Ronne had his first career top five finish, coming in third at 6 under for the week.
How it Happened: Foust opened his day with five consecutive pars before making birdies at the par-3 15th and the par-5 18th to shoot 2 under on the back nine. He birdied two of his first three on the front nine to get to 4 under, but made his only bogey of the day at the par-4 fifth hole and finished in a tie for 23rd.
Ronne went bogey free on the back nine to begin his round, making birdies at 12 and 18 to make the turn at 2 under. He made a bogey and eight pars on his front nine to finish with a 1-under 70.
Edwin Yi shot a 3-over 74 and finished tied for 18th at 1 over and Donald Kay turned in a 4-over 75 and placed tied for 53rd. Ryan Gronlund closed his week with a 5-over 76 and came in tied for 48th.
USC won the team title at 21 under while BYU's Peter Kuest claimed medalist honors with a five-shot win at 13 under.
Notable: Ronne's third-place finish was the best by a UO freshman since Norman Xiong shared medalist honors at the 2017 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate … Foust's 68 was his third career round in the 60s, all of which have come this year … Oregon took advantage of the par-5s all week, going 21 under with a 4.65 scoring average.
