Ducks Return Home to Host Green Bay
11/18/18 | Men's Basketball
Oregon wraps up the 2K Empire Classic with the second of two Campus Round games. The Ducks will host Green Bay on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
THE STARTING 5
• 1 – Friday against No. 15 Syracuse, Dana Altman passed Basketball Hall of Famer Howard Hobson for second on the UO career coaching wins list. Altman now has 213 wins at Oregon. Hobson has 212, including the 1939 NCAA Championship.
• 2 – Oregon's defeat of No. 15 Syracuse on Friday marked the Ducks' first win over a top-15 non-conference opponent during the regular season since Oregon took down No. 14 Kansas, 84-78, on Dec. 7, 2002, in front of 20,762 fans at the Rose Garden in Portland, the biggest crowd to ever watch a college basketball game in the State of Oregon.
• 3 – Newcomers pace Ducks in Manhattan. Graduate transfer Ehab Amin led the Ducks with a season-high 25 points and three steals against Iowa in the semifinals of the 2K Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden. Freshman Bol Bol then topped that with 26 points in the consolation final against No. 15 Syracuse. Bol also scored 14 points against Iowa and had eight total blocked shots and was named to the all-tournament team.
• 4 – With three blocks in the season opener against Portland State, Kenny Wooten - in just his 37th career game - passed Bob Fife (93, 1989-93) for fourth on the UO career blocks. He now has 96.
• 5 – Young Fresh Fellows. Of Oregon's 13-player roster, 77 percent (10) are either freshman or sophomores. The three outliers are junior Payton Pritchard, senior Paul White and senior grad transfer Ehab Amin.
COMMON OPPONENTS
As part of the 2K Empire Classic, Oregon and Green Bay have shared a couple of common opponents this season. The Ducks defeated Eastern Washington 81-47, while the Phoenix got past the Eagles 82-78 in overtime. Both teams also fell to Iowa - 77-69 for the Ducks and 93-82 for UWGB.
THE TALL FIRS
The average height of Oregon's frontline players is 6-10. That includes Bol Bol (7-2), Miles Norris (6-10), Louis King (6-9), Francis Okoro (6-9), Paul White (6-9) and Kenny Wooten (6-9).
BOEHEIM ON THE DUCKS
After facing the Ducks in the 2K Empire Classic, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim had high praise for Oregon's interior defense and freshman Bol Bol. "You're not getting to the basket against Oregon," said Boeheim. On the Ducks' 7-2 freshman, the Hall of Fame coach offered this: "He's a good player, he's big, he's tough. He's very good. He's a big problem out there."
FRESHMEN DEBUTS
Bol Bol made a splash with a double-double (12-12) in his Oregon debut against Portland State, and then followed that with another double-double (23-12) versus Eastern Washington. Bol is the first UO freshman to open his career with back-to-back double-doubles. He followed that by being named to the 2K Classic all-tournament team. He scored 14 points with seven rebounds against Iowa and then followed that with a season-high 26 points versus No. 15 Syracuse. He also had eight blocks for the tournament. Against Portland State, freshman Francis Okoro was efficient with 10 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes. Will Richardson also saw brief minutes against the Vikings and netted seven points in eight minutes. He then scored seven points against No. 15 Syracuse.
VETERANS MAKE PRESENCE FELT
Oregon only has three upperclassmen on the roster, and all three started the season opener versus Portland State. Junior Payton Pritchard led the Ducks with 22 points, senior Paul White added 15 points and senior Ehab Amin had four points and six rebounds. Pritchard had 10 points and eight assists in his second outing versus Eastern Washington, while White reached double figures in the second straight game with 11 against the Eagles. Amin was a bright spot for the Ducks against Iowa with 25 points, while Pritchard had 18 against No. 15 Syracuse.
PRITCHARD MOVING UP CAREER ASSIST LIST
Payton Pritchard entered his junior year on pace to break Kenya Wilkins' UO career assists record of 614. Pritchard moved past former NBA all-star Terrell Brandon (315/1989-91) for eighth against Eastern Washington and now shows 332 career assists. Fred Jones is seventh with 367 assists from 1998-02.
DUCK MEN AND WOMEN MAKE HISTORY AS TOP PAC-12 PRESEASON PICKS
The Oregon men's and women's basketball teams made history when both teams were predicted to win the conference in their respective preseason polls. It is the first time in conference history that the preseason selections to win the league in men's and women's basketball have come from the same school. The only other time the Duck men were picked first in the preseason poll was 2016-17. Oregon shared the league title with Arizona that year. The Ducks received 288 points and 16 first-place votes in a poll of media members. UCLA was second with 264 points (six first-place votes), followed by Washington (249), Arizona (205) and USC (203).
ALTMAN PASSES HALL OF FAMER HOBSON
Dana Altman needs 23 more wins to become the school's all-time winningest coach. With Oregon's 80-65 defeat of No. 15 Syracuse on Nov. 16, Altman passed Basketball Hall of Famer Howard Hobson for second in UO coaching victories with 213. Hobson, the head coach at Oregon for 11 years (1936-47) including the 1939 NCAA Championship, won 212 career games with the Ducks. Ernie Kent won 235 games in 13 seasons (1998-2010).
