Soemarno, Roberts Claim UCSB Doubles Title
10/07/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team closed out play at the UCSB Classic Sunday with five wins and two flight titles including a win by Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts in the top flight of the doubles draw.
"It was great to see the guys take the title this weekend but we still have a lot to improve on as the fall progresses," assistant coach Arron Spencer said. "The best part was that Armando and Charles both finished the weekend better than they started which is always the goal at these fall events. Hopefully, we can clean up some things and carry the momentum into regionals next weekend."
Opening the day with doubles play, Soemarno and Roberts claimed the 'A' Flight title with an 8-4 victory over the Stanford pair of Jack Barber and Genesen. The Ducks' duo is now 15-6, dating back to last year when it was 12-6 with seven wins at the No. 1 doubles spot in dual play.
The Ducks also saw success with a default win by Ty Gentry and Joshua Charlton in the B-Flight final and a victory by Oshima and Emmanuel Coste in consolation play of the C draw.
Coste also picked up a win in singles play Sunday, besting Washington's Ernesto Turegano in straight sets in the 'A' consolation bracket. The Ducks' other victory on the day came from freshman Evan Felcher who posted a 6-2, 7-6 win over Adam Torocsik of Washington.

Senior Thomas Laurent's week at the ITA All-American in Tulsa featured a run to the quarterfinals. He also qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 7-11) in Surprise, Ariz. With three wins at the season-opening event, Laurent has moved in fourth place on the program's all-time list with 78 career victories.
"Thomas, as expected, had another great week to put himself in contention for one of the slams," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "His professionalism and how he goes about preparing is something we can all learn from. A huge congratulations to Tom for yet another stellar accomplishment and great start to the fall."
Up next for Oregon is the ITA Northwest Regional tournament beginning Friday in Seattle. The team's next home tournament is Nov. 2-4 when it hosts the Duck Invitational.
