Seven Wins on Day One of ITA Northwest Regional
10/11/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team collected seven wins Thursday on the opening day of the ITA Northwest Regional in Seattle. Overall, the Ducks have eight entries—five singles, three doubles—advancing in the main draw. Day two of the regional tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m.
"Today was a good day and it was nice to see the team bond in pulling for one another," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "We got a lot of wins today, and even in the two losses in singles, we were very, very competitive which is encouraging. Tomorrow is a new day and we'll be ready to lay it all on the line again."
The Ducks advanced three teams to the round of 16 in the doubles draw. The duo of Emmanuel Coste and Ty Gentry picked up two wins Thursday and will next face the tournament's No. 2-seeded team of Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi of Cal.
Coming off its title last weekend at the UCSB Classic, the duo of Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts picked up an 8-7(2) win over Louis Chabut and Hermont Legaspi of Sacramento State. Oregon also got a doubles win from Joshua Charlton and Thomas Laurent. Both teams are No. 5-8 seeds which was good for a first-round bye.
In singles play, Charlton, Riki Oshima and Ethan Young-Smith posted straight-set wins to move on to the second round of the main draw. The trio will be joined in the next round by Coste and Gentry who each had first-round byes. Young-Smith is set to take on No. 2 Damon Kesaris from St. Mary's.
