Laurent Qualifies, Ducks to Play for Three UCSB Titles
10/06/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – On a busy day for the Oregon men's tennis team, senior Thomas Laurent split a pair of matches at the ITA All-American and the Ducks played their way into three finals at the UCSB Classic. Among that group, the duo of Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts will play for the A Flight doubles title.
Laurent's run at the ITA All-American in Tulsa came to an end Saturday afternoon with a straight-set loss to top-seeded Nuno Borges of Mississippi State. However, by advancing to the quarterfinals, Laurent did secure a spot in the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 7-11) in Surprise, Ariz.
In his first match Saturday, Laurent dropped the opening set but responded with a pair of breaks in the second to send the match into a decisive third frame. Georgia's Jan Zielinski, the No. 22-ranked player in the ITA preseason poll, rode an early break to a 4-1 lead. Facing elimination, Laurent rattled off the final five games of the match to complete the comeback victory.
Soemarno and Roberts advanced to the A Flight final with an 8-6 win over Washington. Another Pac-12 opponent—Jack Barber and Will Genesen of Stanford—awaits in Sunday's title match. In the B Flight doubles draw, Ty Gentry and Joshua Charlton had an 8-7 (4) semifinals victory over Cal Poly and will now take on the UCLA duo of Matthew Tsolakyan and Max Wild.
In singles play, sophomore Riki Oshima won twice Saturday including a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jackson Suh of Cal in the B Flight semifinals. He is set to face Joseph Rotheram of UCSB for the flight title. Oshima and doubles partner Emmanuel Coste are also in line to play in Sunday's third-place match in the C Flight.
