How it Happened: In doubles, NC State struck early, as Marina Frantova and Anna Rogers defeated the No. 82-ranked pair of freshman Julia Eshet and sophomore Shweta Sangwan. The Ducks would bounce back however, as junior Nia Rose and senior Marlou Kluiving took down Adriana Reami and Tayla Stenta 6-3, leaving the deciding point up to the No. 2 position. Junior Alyssa Tobita and freshman Rifanty Kahfiani got the job done, besting Bianca Moldovan and Claudia Wiktorin 6-4.
In singles, momentum continued to sway in favor of the Ducks, as five out of the six first sets were claimed by Oregon. NC State earned their first point of the day as Reami won in three sets over Rose 0-6, 6-0, 6-1. No. 117-ranked Sangwan moved things along to earn the Ducks a slight edge back with a straight set win over Rogers 6-2, 6-4. The score evened back up to 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 decision by Amanda Rebol over Kluiving in the No. 6 position. The match then went in all favor of the Wolfpack, as NC State pulled out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 by No. 86 Frantova over No. 79 Tobita. To clinch the match and to move to the Regional final, Wiktorin took down Eshet 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Daniela Nasser's match against Moldovan went unfinished.
Season At a Glance: The last time the Ducks made an appearance in the NCAA tournament was in 2007, when the team fell to BYU at the Stanford regional 4-0.
In marking the 20th anniversary of the Ducks' first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, this year also marks the 10 year anniversary of Silverio winning the tournament during her playing days at Georgia Tech.
With an overall record of 14-11, this marks the team's best finish since the 2005-06 season, and the record of 6-4 in the Pac-12 is the team's best conference record since 2004-05.
This season was monumental, marking defeats over UCLA and USC – the first over those programs, let alone both occurring within in the same season. In the first ever Pac-12 team championship, No. 5 seed Oregon took down the No. 4 seed Bruins 4-3 to advance to the championship semifinals.
Kluiving led the team with a singles record of 21-9 and became the 5th all-time program leader in singles wins with an overall record of 67-28. Eshet made a splash in her first season of collegiate action with a record of 20-10 in singles play and 21-8 in doubles action. The pair of Kluving and Eshet led the Ducks in doubles wins this season with a record of 19-6, while Sangwan and Tobita followed at 17-6.?
Quotes: Head coach Alison Silverio -
"It was amazing for us to get here and a wonderful experience to build upon for next year and next season. Congratulations to NC State, they're a tough team and they certainly deserved to win today. They battled a little bit better than we did but to have this experience and learn from it, we certainly will, and we'll be ready for next year."
Junior Alyssa Tobita -
"We started out really well in doubles with lots of energy and making our moves and brought that over to singles to win most of the first sets. It really stings since we put ourselves in a great position to win. But, I don't want the team to forget all the great things we did this year. I'm proud of what we've done and I'm excited to go after it for my last year next season.
Senior Marlou Kluiving -
"We had our chances today and we were not able to close it out. It hurts, and it will continue to hurt for a little while. Our season was great - playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years was an awesome experience, however, we all wanted this to have a different ending."
