
Ducks Look to Bounce Back for Second Day of The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Oregon men's golf team had a one-day turnaround from the Duck Invitational before competing in The Goodwin at the Stanford Golf Course. In the three-day tournament's opening round on Thursday afternoon, the Ducks finished tied for 13th with Cal Poly with a 296 (+16).
Redshirt sophomore Ryan Gronlund paced the Ducks with an opening round of 71 (+1) and is tied for 18th. Freshman Norman Xiong also finished with the top 30 on Thursday with a 72 (+2) and is tied for 27th.
No. 12 Stanford is currently in first with a round one of 276 (-4). No. 36 Washington is second overall (283, +3), SMU is third (284, +4), and No. 1 USC is fourth (285, +5). No. 44 BYU rounds out the top five with a 288 (+8).
Individually, Corey Pereira (Washington) currently leads the field at 4-under after carding a 66. Stanford's Maverick McNealy (No. 5) and Franklin Huang (No. 89) are tied for second with opening round 67's. Tied for fourth overall is Harry Hall (No. 100) of UNLV, and Pepperdine's Joshua McCarthy. The pair tallied scores of 68 (-2).

How it Happened: Through the front nine, Oregon was 13th overall with some tough holes that set the Ducks back. Senior Wyndham Clark had three consecutive bogeys to begin the day, as did Xiong on Holes 2-4. Xiong and sophomore Edwin Yi tallied double bogeys on Holes 6 and 2, respectively, while freshman Kevin Geniza had back-to-back double bogeys to begin play.
Through 12 the Ducks would notch three more double bogeys and three bogeys, poising the Ducks for a tough finish.
Gronlund had an impressive Eagle on Hole 16 to give him a boost for the highest Duck finish of the day in a tie for 22nd.
Xiong had the second best finish for the Ducks at two-over, tied for 31st. Yi (+6) tied for 81st, while Clark (+7) and Geniza (+11) rounded out the Oregon lineup with ties for 92nd and 116, respectively
What it Means: After ending the opening round of the their last three tournaments in first, this is only the second of six spring tournaments the Ducks haven't commanded the lead. At the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikola, Hawaii (2/2 – 2/4), the Ducks finished tied for seventh out of 21 teams.
