COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sabrina Ionescu tallied a triple-double for the second-straight game and Ruthy Hebard went a perfect 10-for-10 from floor as the No. 10 ranked Oregon women's basketball team defeated No. 19 Texas A&M, 83-68, on Thursday night at Reed Arena.
Oregon (3-0) advances to the preseason WNIT championship game for a showdown with No. 5 ranked Louisville on Sunday. The Ducks and Cardinals tip at 12 p.m. PT on CBS Sports Network.
PAC-12 RECORD: With her sixth career triple-double, Ionescu tied Nicole Powell's Pac-12 record of six triple-doubles. The sophomore had 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Despite going 3-of-14 from the field, Ionescu went 9-of-11 at the free throw line and scored all 16 of her points in the second half. The NCAA career record for triple-doubles is seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon shot the ball well in the first quarter, 6-of-12, but seven turnovers in the opening period allowed Texas A&M to take an 18-13 lead. Hebard had nine of the Ducks' 13 first-quarter points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Oregon rallied back early in the second quarter, briefly taking a 28-27 lead on an Aina Ayuso baseline jumper with 1:51 left before halftime. The Aggies went on a 7-0 run to end the period, however, and owned a 34-28 lead at halftime. The Ducks cleared up the turnover issue, committing just three in the second quarter but Oregon struggled from beyond the arc in the first half, shooting just 1-of-8 from deep.
The Ducks opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take back the lead, 35-34, fueled by a pair of Hebard buckets and a Lexi Bando three-pointer. Ionescu did not score her first points of the game until she made a layup with just under five minutes left in the third. Ionescu buried a three-pointer from the corner to give the Ducks a 52-45 lead with 2:23 left in the quarter. Bando hit another three-pointer as the third quarter expired to give the Ducks their biggest lead to that point, 57-49.
Oregon continued to pull away in the fourth quarter. An Oti Gildon layup gave the Ducks a double-digit advantage, 62-51, with 8:33 remaining in the fourth. But Texas A&M cut the lead down to five points, 67-62, on a Danni Williams three-pointer with 3:28 left in the game. Hebard stopped the run with a bucket inside. Gildon later drew a charge on defense and Maite Cazorla followed with a three-pointer to give the Ducks a 74-62 lead with 1:50 to play and the Ducks never looked back. Ionescu grabbed a rebound in the final minute to secure her sixth career triple-double and second in as many games.
WHO STOOD OUT: Ruthy Hebard went a perfect 10-for-10 from the floor, the third-best mark in UO single-game history…Both Jillian Alleyne and Lauri Landerholm share the record, going 11-for-11 in a game…Hebard finished with a game-high 24 points plus eight rebounds…Oti Gildon came close to a double-double as well with 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
QUOTEABLE: Head coach Kelly Graves - "We have come to expect that of (Ruthy), she is a great finisher and I thought her teammates did a great job of giving her the basketball, were she could just put it in. There were a couple moves where she was off the block and turned, ripping through defenders for the layup on the opposite side. I thought they were big-time moves, those were Ruthy moves. We needed every one of them tonight, and she is a great player, there's no question about it."
