Ducks Fall in Preseason WNIT Final
11/19/17 | Women's Basketball
LOUISVILLE, KY. – The No. 10 ranked Oregon women's basketball team couldn't overcome a first half deficit in a 74-61 loss at No. 5 Louisville in the Preseason WNIT championship on Sunday at the KFC Yum! Center.
Sophomores Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu were two of six players named to the Preseason WNIT all-tournament team. Hebard scored in double-figures in all four games and Ionescu recorded two triple doubles.
How it Happened: After Oregon (3-1) got out to an early 5-2 lead, the Cardinals (5-0) used an 11-0 run to open up an eight-point lead with 4:20 to go in the first quarter. Louisville's Asia Durr scored 14 of her 26 points in the opening period to help the Cardinals take a 23-14 lead.
Louisville continued to build on its lead in the second quarter with pestering defense, forcing eight Oregon turnovers in the period to take a 43-27 lead into the half. The Cardinals also used the free throw line to stretch their lead, going 7-of-8 in the second quarter alone.
The teams traded buckets for most of the third quarter to keep the Ducks within striking distance heading into the fourth down 61-46. After being held scoreless through three quarters, Ionescu started to find her rhythm, scoring eight consecutive points for Oregon to cut the Louisville lead to 11 with 5:26 to go. The Cardinals quickly answered with a 7-2 run to make it 74-58 and put the game out of reach.
Who Stood Out: Hebard finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine boards. Maite Cazorla scored 13 points and Mallory McGwire added 11 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting. Satou Sabally provided a nice scoring punch off the bench, finishing with 10 points and four rebounds. Hebard went a combined 16-of-20 from the field against Texas A&M and Louisville on the Ducks' week-long road trip.
All Preseason WNIT Team: Named to the preseason all-WNIT team were Sabrina Ionescu and Ruthy Hebard plus Louisville's Asia Durr, Michigan's Katelynn Flaherty and Texas A&M's Chennedy Carter. Louisville's Myisha Hines-Allen was named tournament MVP.
Up Next: The Ducks return home to host Eastern Washington on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena.
