Wise, Ducks Lead After Day One at Pasatiempo Golf Club

EUGENE – Led by Aaron Wise's record first round, the Oregon men's golf team leads after the first day of play at the Western Intercollegiate, played at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club.
How It Happened: Wise tied the Western's course record 7-under 63 in Monday's first round to lead the Ducks to the top spot on the team leaderboard, while holding a three-stroke lead over Maverick McNealy of Stanford on the player leaderboard. Heading into Tuesday's second round, the Ducks lead by four strokes over No. 9 Stanford, while top-ranked USC sits in third at 4-under.
As a team, the Ducks posted a balanced effort Monday. Oregon has three of its six players in the top 15 on the leaderboard, and five in the top 25.
Wise fired what was arguably his most impressive round this season, converting seven birdies to no bogeys on his way to his career-low 63. After teeing off on the sixth hole, the Lake Elsinore, Calif., native picked up three birdies over his first five holes to stay within an arm's length of McNealy for much of the day, then birdied four of his last five to vault into the lead.
Zach Foushee carded a 1-under 69 Monday for his first round. Despite some trouble on the par-4 10th where the senior turned in a double, Foushee was solid, dropping in four birdies on his way to wrapping up his first 18 holes in a tie for 13th.
With a 69 of his own on Monday, Nigel Lett finished tied for 13th as well. Lett, who began his round on the seventh hole, birdied the first and second to get back under par before wrapping up his round.
Both junior Sulman Raza and freshman Edwin Yi were up and down throughout their first round, but sit at even par and tied for 21st heading into Tuesday.
Raza struggled to find a rhythm Monday, sinking six birdies, the second-most on the course, but just as many bogeys to turn in a 70 for his opening 18.
Yi recorded back-to-back eagles on Nos. 9 and 10 to get to 3-under for the round through his first four, but four bogeys over the remainder of his round pushed him to a solid even par.
Junior Thomas Lim turned in a 3-over 73 in his first appearance of the spring to tie for 50th. Competing as an individual, senior Brandon McIver also posted a 73 to tie Lim for 50th.
Notable: Wise's first-round 63 tied a tournament course record. Jason Allred (Pepperdine, 2000) and John Streibech (Xavier, 2007) set the mark, and each would go on to win the individual title. Wise is looking for his fifth collegiate title, which would tie Daniel Miernicki's program-leading tournament win total.
Up Next: The Ducks will tee off for the second round of the Western Intercollegiate on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. Oregon will be paired with fifth-place Cal.
