SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Sophomore Aaron Wise carded a 4-under 66 Tuesday to hold a one-stroke lead over Stanford's Maverick McNealy and put the Oregon men's golf team in second heading into the final round at the Western Intercollegiate.
How It Happened: The par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club played tougher than Monday's first round, in which the Ducks carded a 9-under 341. Oregon followed up Monday's effort with a 354 to sit in second at 5-under overall and three strokes back from leader No. 9 Stanford. Top-ranked USC is the only other team in the field under par through 36, currently in third at 2-under.
After firing a tournament course record 63 in his first round, Aaron Wise maintained his lead with a 4-under 66 Tuesday, bested only by Stanford's Maverick McNealy's 64 in the event's second round. Once again, Wise led throughout the day, and at one point, was ahead of second-place McNealy, the third-ranked collegiate golfer in the nation, by as many as five strokes.
Teeing off on the sixth hole, Wise opened his second round with a birdie, and was able to drop in three more before carding his first bogey of the week on the par-3 third hole. The eighth-ranked amateur in the world wouldn't be shaken, however, and converted another birdie on the fourth to get to 11-under overall where he would stay.
Competing as an individual, senior Brandon McIver matched Wise's second-round 66 to sit tied for eighth after Tuesday's action. Starting his round on the 18th, McIver recorded a bogey on the 18th and a double on the par-3 fifth, but finished strong with five birdies, along with an eagle on the par-5 ninth.
For the second straight day, Edwin Yi turned in an even-par 70 in his second round. After recording three birdies to three bogeys Tuesday, the freshman is currently in a tie for 14th.
Nigel Lett sits in a tie for 19th after a 2-over 72 for his second round, despite a pair of double bogeys on the par-3 eighth and the par-4 11th.
Zach Foushee posted a 73 Tuesday to tie himself for 24th after 36 holes. The senior bounced back from a triple on his opening hole of the day, the par-5 sixth, with an eagle on the ninth, but was unable to find a groove, ending his round at 3-over for the day and 2-over for the week.
After a triple on the 17th, junior Sulman Raza birdied three of his last five holes to card a 73 and put himself at 3-over going into the event's final round.
Thomas Lim turned in a 4-over 74 in his second round to move to 7-over for the week and sit in a tie for 56th.
Notable: Wise is looking for his fifth collegiate title, which would tie Daniel Miernicki's program-leading tournament win total … A win would also make the sophomore the first in program history to win three collegiate events in a single season … After playing at an average of 72.78 strokes per round on Monday, the Pasatiempo Golf Club played significantly tougher Tuesday at an average of 73.46.
Up Next: The Ducks tee off for the final round of play at the Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. PT.
