Ducks Win Pac-12 Opener

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team knocked off Washington State 5-2 in its Pac-12 opener on Friday at the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks won their seventh straight match and improved to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in Pac-12 play.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the No. 2 doubles match, Oregon's Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita won 6-2 to put the Ducks ahead early. Then WSU battled back and tied it up after Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska took the No. 3 doubles match, 6-3. The doubles point came down to No. 1 and the Ducks prevailed. Kennan Johnson and Shweta Sangwan took the match, 7-6.
In the No. 4 singles match, Oregon's Sangwan defeated her competitor, Trang Huynh, early, winning her first and second sets 6-0 and 6-, respectively. Another Oregon victory came when Tobita took down Michalkova, in a quick two set match, 6-4 and 6-2, at No. 3.
WSU began to make a comeback when Miksovska won her match over Christi Woodson, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. WSU won a second singles match when Maria Biryukova won against Rose, 6-0, 7-6 at No. 2. In the end, Oregon secured the win at No. 1 singles. After losing the first set, Johnson stormed back to beat Donika Bashota 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Daniela Nasser capped the day for the Ducks with a win over Lize Leenknecht 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
UP NEXT: The Ducks host No. 49 Washington on Sunday at 1 PM.
