MANOA, Hawaii – The Oregon women's tennis team won its fifth-straight match Saturday afternoon, defeating Hawaii, 4-3, at the UH Tennis Complex.
How It Happened: The Ducks (7-2) had no trouble with the 64th-ranked Warriors in doubles, quickly picking up wins on doubles courts one and two to clinch the doubles point.
Kennan Johnson and Shweta Sangwan struck first, carrying over momentum from their win over the 18th-ranked tandem in the nation on Friday to knock off Sarah Gealer and Klara Pribylova, 6-1 in the top spot. Johnson and Sangwan moved to 4-0 as a duo in dual action and 8-2 overall. Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita moved to 6-2 overall as a team when they dropped Roxanne Resma and Cindy Nguyen, 6-2.
The Warriors took a 2-1 lead early on in singles, tallying straight-set wins over Johnson and Rose on courts one and two, respectively.
Tobita extended her string of success in singles, defeating Gealer, 6-2, 6-3, to tie the match at two. The sophomore is a perfect 7-0 in dual action and an impressive 12-5 overall for the season.
Freshman Shweta Sangwan put the Ducks a point away from the win, downing Pribylova, 6-4, 6-2 for her fifth straight and team-leading 15th overall win of the season.
After Hawaii tied the match yet again with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Christi Woodson on No. 5, it was Daniela Nasser that sealed the win for the Ducks. In the only match of the day to go three sets, Nasser took down Paulina Petriskova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to clinch the match and become the fifth Duck to reach double digit singles wins this season.
Quotable – Head Coach Alison Silverio: “We had a very hard-fought weekend. It was encouraging to ssee our doubles moving in the right direction. Regardless of the environment, we have to be consistent, disciplined and intentional day in and day out. Making the choice to compete, be united and doing right is an all-the-time thing.”
Up Next: The Ducks return home to the Student Tennis Center next Sunday to host Boise State at 11 a.m. PT.
