Ducks Handle Idaho, 6-1
01/30/16 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE – The Oregon women's tennis team was triumphant in its first home match of the season Saturday, defeating Idaho 6-1 at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: The Ducks jumped out to an early lead, earning victories on doubles courts one and two to take the doubles point. Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita set the tone for the match with a 6-0 shutout over Claire Yang and Belen Barcenilla in the top doubles spot. Soon after, Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan finished off Idaho's Rita Bermudez and Maria Tavares 6-1.
Much like in doubles, Tobita and Rose were the first players off the court in singles as well. Both posted straight-set victories to quickly give the Ducks a 3-0 lead and put the Vandals' backs against the wall. Tobita was the first to strike, handing Tavares a 6-2, 6-1 loss on No. 2, just seconds before Rose defeated Barcenilla 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.
A late addition to the Duck singles lineup, Daniela Nasser clinched the win for Oregon with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Idaho's Lucia Badillos on court six. The win was her fifth-straight singles victory going back to the fall tournament season.
Kluiving and Sangwan added to Oregon's lead with straight-set triumphs of their own. Kluiving downed Idaho's Celine Koets 6-4, 6-2 in the fifth singles spot, and Sangwan knocked off Ana Batiri 6-1, 6-2 on No. 3.
After Micheline Aubuchon dropped a tough first set to Bermudez on No. 4, the freshman came out firing in the second set, going up 4-0 early before eventually taking the second set 6-2 to force a third-set super tiebreaker. Aubuchon fell short in the tiebreaker, however, to drop the match 6-3, 2-6, 10-2 and give the Vandals their lone point of the day.
From Coach Silverio: “It was a good day for our team. The upperclassmen Nia (Rose), Alyssa (Tobita) and Marlou (Kluiving) stepped up, got it done and put that point on the board for us. That was exciting to see from our upperclassmen. Having that leadership out there is something we've really been pushing in practice this last week coming back from Texas Tech. Who is going to come out and bring that energy and be the catalyst? Doubles was a great start to that, and we backed it up in singles. That was great to see.”
“Idaho is a really tough team. They're talented with great players that compete really hard. They're always winning their conference and top in their conference, so for this to be our first home match and us be able to get it going right away was exciting to see. We still have a lot of opportunity for growth. Overall, I think it was a great match for us to start. I was really proud of the energy we brought as a team today.”
What It Means: Handling a tough, upset-minded Idaho team, the Ducks took care of business at home on Saturday to move to 2-1 on the season. Winners of two straight, Oregon turns its attention to another difficult road test as the team sets to head to Texas for the second time in three weeks for a pair of matches against ranked opponents.
Up Next: The Ducks travel to Waco, Texas this week to face 15th-ranked Baylor on Friday at 3 p.m. PT, followed by a matchup at No. 44 Houston on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
