LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Long Beach Invitational Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center. The Ducks went 6-2 in singles and 2-2 in doubles in the opening day of play.
How It Happened: The Ducks were paired with Long Beach State in doubles and Cal State Northridge in singles for the opening day of competition.
Oregon shined in singles, taking six of eight matches over Cal State Northridge. Tobita won in the top singles spot, defeating Mickey Hsu, 6-1, 6-4. Kluiving held down the fourth singles position with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kiryang Kim. Rose came up short in the first match of her sophomore season, falling to CSUN's Vivian Lin in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Oregon newcomers went 4-0 in singles on the first day of competition. Johnson, Sangwan, Nasser and Woodson each took their match in straight sets. Competing at No. 3, Johnson picked up a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Skyla Alcon, while Shweta Sangwan had little trouble in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kristin Poei on No. 5. Nasser defeated Mari Taslagyan 6-4, 6-0 in the six spot as Woodson handled CSUN's Jessica Warren, 6-2, 6-1.
The Ducks and 49ers split four matches in doubles. Oregon's Marlou Kluiving and Christi Woodson knocked off LBSU's Ebba Unden and Georgie Sanders, 6-3 on the third court. The Duck duo of Daniela Nasser and Paloma Gomez took down Antonella Santeusanio and Ella Monsey, 6-3, on No. 4. Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita fell, 6-4, in the top doubles spot to Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard, while Ebba Unden and Georgie Sanders downed Oregon's tandem of Shweta Sangwan and Kennan Johnson, 6-1.
What It Means: Being that this weekend's tournament follows a hidden dual format, no team results are recorded. Oregon will use the tournament to fine tune its lineup and gain some valuable experience in both singles and doubles competing in a dual competition. After a successful first day of play in Long Beach, the Ducks still have two more days of competition to tune themselves up before a tough Texas road trip next weekend in which they will face two ranked teams, including No. 17 Texas Tech.
Up Next: The Ducks return to the Rhodes Center Saturday for the second day of action at the Long Beach Invitational. Oregon will face Cal State Northridge in doubles and Denver in singles.
