Rose Topples Another Ranked Foe in Loss
04/05/15 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – Oregon freshman Nia Rose once again played the role of giant slayer on Saturday when she toppled California's Klara Fabikova, the No. 22-ranked singles player in the nation, 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 singles. The Golden Bears however were able to come away with the 6-1 victory over Oregon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
How It Happened: Lina Åkesson and Sofia Hager was the first Oregon (8-9, 2-5 Pac-12) duo to fall in doubles play, dropping their match against Lyann Hoang and Karla Popovic 8-2. Cal (16-3, 7-1 Pac-12) captured the doubles point moments later when its 11th-ranked doubles team of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi dispatched Rose and Alyssa Tobita at the No. 1 position, 8-3.
Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving were tied with Lynn Chi and Denise Starr, 4-4, at No. 2 doubles when the Golden Bears clinched the doubles point.
Taking the place of Hager at singles No. 6, Paloma Gomez couldn't quite match up with Hoang and fell 6-1, 6-0. Long battled against No. 33 Susanyi for as long as she could, but eventually fell in straight sets.
With Cal on top 3-0, No. 61 Popovic dispatched Kluiving 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to clinch the match. Soon after, Tobita suffered the same fate as Kluiving and Long to make it 5-0 in favor of the home team.
After Rose upset Fabikova at No. 1 singles, Åkesson would fall 7-5, 6-3 to give Cal the 6-1 victory.
Upset Minded: Rose has now upset top-25 singles opponent in back-to-back weeks … Last week she defeated No. 11 Giuliana Olmos at home by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 … The true freshman from New York, N.Y., is now 2-3 against ranked opponents at No. 1 singles.
Up Next: The Ducks return home to the friendly confines of the Student Tennis Center where they'll take on the Arizona schools. Arizona State will be on tap first with a scheduled 1:30 p.m. (PT) first serve on April 10, while the match against Arizona is slated for 9:30 a.m. (PT) on Sunday, April 12.
