Ducks Fall in Doubles Bracket
04/25/15 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team concluded play at the Pac-12 Championships on Friday when both of its doubles teams were eliminated from the championship bracket at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
How It Happened: UO's top doubles pair of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita opened the day with a match up against the No. 1-seeded team of Carol Zhao and Taylor Davidson from Stanford. Rose and Tobita kept it close for a good portion of the match, but the Cardinal pair would separate themselves and secure the 8-5 win in the end. UO's freshman pair finished their season 25-10 and cemented themselves in the Oregon record books with the second-most wins in a single-season.
A couple hours later, Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving stepped onto the court to face Utah's pair of Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher. Like Oregon's No. 1 doubles couple earlier in the day, Long and Kluiving kept the match as close as they could but couldn't quite pull off the win and fell 8-6.
In the championship back draw for singles, Tobita fell to ASU's Kassidy Jump 6-0, 6-3.
What It Means: Sitting at No. 56 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, Oregon will most likely be left out of the NCAA Tournament.
Bright Future Ahead: However, the Ducks have enjoyed a great season under first-year head coach Alison Silverio. In her first year, Oregon had won more Pac-12 matches than it has ever had in over a decade while its future looks even brighter with a top-25 recruiting class coming in and the return of Rose, Tobita and Kluiving. Kluiving's 22 singles victories ties here for ninth on the single-season wins list for UO in singles.
